Easy Isnad Memorization: The Sahifah of Hammam ibn Munabbih
A dear teacher of mine would give us useful tips on memorising ahadith with their chains of narration. One of those pieces of advice was to memorize the sahifah of Hammam ibn Munabbih (d. 131), a collection of approximately 138 ahadith that he had taken from his teacher Abu Hurayrah (d. 59), may Allah be pleased with him. If one memorises this sahifah, then they have effectively memorised 138 ahadith with their chain of narration (Hammam - Abu Hurayrah - Rasul Allah صلى الله عليه وسلّم). The collection, arguably the earliest Hadith work that we have available, was published by Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah (someone who deserves a post in his own right).
Anyway, I recently came across a very nice find from Imam Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i (d. 624) from his al-Amali al-Sharihah li-Mufradat al-Fatihah (1:289), a work of al-Rafi'i that is not often appreciated. He mentions that his father, Abu al-Fadhl al-Rafi'i (d. 580), would also make him memorise this work as a child!

In a Sarf exam in 1999, I memorised the rules in Urdu properly. Somebody in the exam didn’t, and conveyed the effective meaning of the ruling to the examiner. The examiner insisted the ruling is offered word for word. The student protested but the examiner insisted. In my heart at the time as a 15 year old kid, I thought YEH, THIS IS WHAT AN EXAMINER MUST DO.
I was wrong. But the adults should have known better.
Sarf rules, let alone the exact wording of a rule expressed in Urdu (of all languages), are not revelation from God. The purpose of Sarf isn’t the rules or definitions or even the gardans (word sequence practice), but the ability to apply this knowledge by being sake to identify individual words, and to extract individual Arabic words from non-Arabic languages to Arabic.
To be honest, if your final Sarf exam as an examiner focuses on gardans or i’lal rules or definitions, you failed at identifying the objective of Sarf.

Repost from فهد بن عبد القيوم بن العلاء
Abū al-Yamān (d. 222) was Aḥmad’s teacher and a great ḥadīth-scholar who made a mistake he never forgot.
He went to Mālik and saw his extraordinarily lavish lifestyle that, in his eyes, was not the “way (akhlāq) of the scholars,” and so he refused to study with him. But when he matured, he regretted his lack of good judgment.
Many people today exhibit similar tendencies. They make impulsive and emotional judgments about learned men, as they prioritize appearance, formalities, and other superficial aspects over actual substance.
However, unlike Abū al-Yamān, they are unable to overcome their immaturity.

Nice analogy by Ghazali, applicable to those who stay away from Quran translations out of fear of misunderstanding the Quran

The fact that many graduates from traditional Islamic seminary across the world require deprogramming after graduation in order to develop an attitude that is more congruent with not only the people around them and the current global order, but also Islam itself, suggests a deeply entrenched pedagogical malaise.
Literally millions of man hours are being wasted to get graduates to speed, and to drag them out of the narrow ahistorical idealism by which they’ve been programmed.

Summary of AbY al-Juday’’s old fatwa on combining Maghrib and Isha in the days of persistent twilight in the link below.
Some are opposed to this but I personally see no problem supporting it.
This method is strongly recommended for those who get tired during the day and would find it difficult to wake up for Fajr should they stay up late. This includes women with children, men who do manual labour, university students, drivers, teenagers, the elderly, and anyone else whose situation resembles those of the aforementioned categories.
Even if someone does not have any particular reason to combine (eg they’re say on their bottoms playing PS5 all day and collect benefits), they too are allowed to adopt this practice, as the fundamental reason and underlying rationale for the permissibility of combining is celestial phenomena and not human.
