🔵 WHAT IS SOCIALISM❓ ▶️ Socialism is a populist economic and political system based on collective, common, or public ownership of the means of production. Those means of production include the machinery, tools, and factories used to produce goods that aim to directly satisfy human needs. In contrast to capitalism, whereby business owners control the means of production and pay wages to workers to use those means, socialism envisions shared ownership and control among the laboring class. ▶️ In a purely socialist system, all production and distribution decisions are made by the collective, directed by a central planner or government body. Worker cooperatives, however, are also a form of socialized production. Socialist systems tend to have robust welfare systems and social safety net so that individuals rely on the state for everything from food to healthcare. The government determines the output and pricing levels of these goods and services. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 CAPITALISM VS. SOCIALISM ▶️ In terms of political economy, capitalism is often contrasted with socialism. The fundamental difference between capitalism and socialism is the ownership and control of the means of production. In a capitalist economy, property and businesses are owned and controlled by individuals. In a socialist economy, the state owns and manages the vital means of production. However, other differences also exist in the form of equity, efficiency, and employment. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 PROS & CONS OF CAPITALISM ▶️ PROS 🟢 More efficient allocation of capital resources. 🟢 Competition leads to lower consumer prices. 🟢 Wages and general standards of living have risen overall. 🟢 Spurs innovation and invention. ▶️ CONS 🔴 Creates inherent class conflict between capital and labor. 🔴 Generates enormous wealth disparities and social inequalities. 🔴 Unequal conditions lead to poverty and unemployment for some. 🔴 Can incentivize corruption and crony capitalism in the pursuit of profit. 🔴 Produces negative externalities such as pollution. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 WHY PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS MATTER FOR CAPITALISM❓ ▶️ For individuals or businesses to deploy their capital goods confidently, a system must exist that protects their legal right to own or transfer private property. A capitalist society will rely on the use of contracts, fair dealing, and tort law to facilitate and enforce these private property rights. ▶️ When property is not privately owned but shared by the public, a problem known as the tragedy of the commons can emerge. With a common pool resource, which all people can use, and none can limit access to, all individuals have an incentive to extract as much use-value as they can and no incentive to conserve or reinvest in the resource. Privatizing the resource is one possible solution to this problem, along with various voluntary or involuntary collective action approaches. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 UNDERSTANDING CAPITALISM ▶️ Functionally, capitalism is one system of economic production and resource distribution. Instead of planning economic decisions through centralized political methods, as with socialism or feudalism, economic planning under capitalism occurs via decentralized, competitive, and voluntary decisions. ▶️ Capitalism is essentially an economic system whereby the means of production (i.e., factories, tools, machines, raw materials, etc.) are organized by one or more business owners (capitalists). Capitalists then hire workers to operate the means of production in return for wages. Workers, however, do not have any claim on the means of production nor on the profits generated from their labor - these belong to the capitalists. ▶️ As such, private property rights are fundamental to capitalism. Most modern concepts of private property stem from John Locke's theory of homesteading, in which human beings claim ownership through mixing their labor with unclaimed resources. Once owned, the only legitimate means of transferring property are through voluntary exchange, gifts, inheritance, or re-homesteading of abandoned property. Private property promotes efficiency by giving the owner of resources an incentive to maximize the value of their property. So the more valuable the resource is, the more trading power it provides the owner. In a capitalist system, the person who owns the property is entitled to any value associated with that property. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 WHAT IS CAPITALISM❓ ▶️ Capitalism is an economic system in which private individuals or businesses own capital goods. At the same time, business owners (capitalists) employ workers (labor) who only receive wages; labor does not own the means of production but only uses them on behalf of the owners of capital. ▶️ The production of goods and services under capitalism is based on supply and demand in the general market—known as a market economy—rather than through central planning—known as a planned economy or command economy. ▶️ The purest form of capitalism is free market or laissez-faire capitalism. Here, private individuals are unrestrained. They may determine where to invest, what to produce or sell, and at which prices to exchange goods and services. The laissez-faire marketplace operates without checks or controls. ▶️ Today, most countries practice a mixed capitalist system that includes some degree of government regulation of business and ownership of select industries. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 HOW DO CENTRAL PLANS WORK IN A COMMAND ECONOMY❓ ▶️ Communist nations with command economies are prone to introducing multi-year plans that are expected to result in improved conditions for all its people. China has had no fewer than 14 five-year plans, with the current one ending in 2025. ▶️ Central plans generally set goals for each industry and establish strategies for every sector. Industries are required to participate in government objectives such as reducing carbon emissions or revitalizing rural economies. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 HOW DOES A COMMAND ECONOMY DIFFER FROM A FREE-MARKET ECONOMY❓ ▶️ In a free-market economy, private enterprises determine their levels of production in response to the law of supply and demand. ▶️ In a command economy, the decision is dictated by the government. ▶️ Few free-market economies today operate entirely on the principle of laissez-faire. A government may use public policies and regulations to encourage the production of a product, such as fuel-efficient cars. ▶️ And some command economies have loosened their control. China's economic boom did not begin until it created its own blend of socialist ideology and capitalist enterprise. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉

🔵 WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A COMMAND ECONOMY❓ ▶️ Command economies are controlled from the top by government planners. In general, this includes: 1⃣ Public ownership of major industries. 2⃣ Government control of production levels and distribution quotas. 3⃣ Government control of prices and salaries. ▶️ Monopolies are common in command economies as they are considered necessary to meet the goals of the national economy. ━━━━━━━━━━━ 💰 @Exchange 🪙 | 📈 @Value 📉
