*The Origin of the Polytechnic University: From the Industrial Revolution to Today * The word "polytechnic" comes from two Greek parts: "poly" meaning "many" and "techne" meaning "art or skill." So a polytechnic university is a place where many technical and scientific skills are taught. But the story of how this type of university emerged goes back about 250 years. In the 18th century, Europe was undergoing a great transformation called the Industrial Revolution. Steam engines, textile factories, and railway lines were expanding rapidly. The old universities of that time, such as Oxford and Cambridge, focused mostly on theoretical sciences like philosophy, theology, and pure mathematics. They did not train skilled engineers and technicians. The newly established industries needed people who had both scientific knowledge and the ability to solve practical problems. In such circumstances, France took the lead. In 1794, after the French Revolution, a school called "École Polytechnique" was opened in Paris. The goal of this school was to train military and civil engineers to serve the country. Its teaching method was completely innovative: students first studied advanced mathematics and physics for two years, then moved on to practical engineering courses. This model was quickly imitated across Europe and America. In the 19th century, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland also established their own polytechnic universities. For example, the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich) began operating in 1855. In Britain, the London Polytechnic University (now the University of Westminster) took shape later. In America, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), founded in 1861, although not called a polytechnic, is based on the same idea. Now let's come to Iran. Iran's first polytechnic university was named "Tehran Polytechnic University," which was founded in 1956 (1335 in the Solar Hijri calendar). Its founder was Habib Nafisi, an Iranian engineer and statesman. This university was later renamed "Amirkabir University of Technology" in memory of Amir Kabir (the reformist prime minister of the Qajar era). The purpose of its establishment was to train skilled engineers for Iran's oil, steel, electricity, and textile industries. The initial fields included mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry, and textile engineering. Today, Iran has several other industrial and polytechnic universities, such as Sharif University of Technology, Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology, and Sahand University of Technology in Tabriz. Around the world, polytechnic universities play a key role in technological innovations.
