| 17 | Introduction
Pauri Garhwal is one of the most politically, administratively, and culturally significant districts of Uttarakhand, located in the Garhwal division. Spread across an area of 5,329 sq. km, it uniquely bridges the Gangetic plains (via the Bhabar belt of Kotdwar) and the rugged middle Himalayan terrain. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the entire Garhwal Commissionerate.
Historical Significance
Pauri Garhwal was historically part of the Garhwal Kingdom, consolidated under King Ajay Pal.
The region witnessed Gorkha rule (1803–1815), followed by British control after the defeat of the Gorkhas.
1840: Pauri became the headquarters of the Garhwal district.
1960: Chamoli was carved out of the erstwhile Garhwal district.
1969: Pauri became the headquarters of the newly created Garhwal Division.
Geographic & Strategic Importance
Physiography & River Systems: Dominated by the majestic Dudhatoli Range (which acts as a major water-divide), the district is drained by the Alaknanda River in the north/west and the Nayyar River system (Eastern and Western Nayyar converging at Satpuli).
Strategic Military Footprint: The district holds massive national importance due to Lansdowne, which houses the Regimental Centre of the legendary Garhwal Rifles (established in 1887 by the British and named after Viceroy Lord Lansdowne).
Topography & Borders: It shares international/inter-state proximity with Uttar Pradesh (Bijnor) to the south, and internal boundaries with Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri Garhwal,Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Almora, and Nainital.

Pauri Garhwal has a rich religious landscape combining Shaivism, Shaktism and local folk-deity traditions.

1. Kandoliya Devta Temple – Pauri
One of the important local temples of Pauri.
Located on Kandoliya Hill.
The surrounding area is also an important recreational and tourist zone.
2. Jwalpa Devi Temple
An important Shakti shrine situated along the Nayar River.
It attracts devotees throughout the year.
3. Tarkeshwar Mahadev
A famous Shiva temple in the Lansdowne region.
Surrounded by dense deodar and pine forests.
4. Sidhbali Temple – Kotdwar
One of the most prominent religious sites of Kotdwar.
Dedicated to Lord Hanuman and highly significant in the region.
