Cover Story: The Freedom of being Shuhua

Somewhere between “Boss Baby” and becoming a boss in her own right, Shuhua (@yeh.shaa_) grew up.
At 26, the i-dle (@i_dle_official) member has spent more than eight years in the competitive South Korean entertainment industry. Ask her what would surprise her younger self most about the woman she has become, and her answer has little to do with fame, success, or anything dramatic. Instead, it lies in the stark contrast in how she handles conflict, trading the urge to instantly express herself for a quiet, steady self‑possession. The artiste recently shared a Chinese proverb with her fans that captures this new philosophy: 知难而退—knowing when to retreat in the face of difficulty. She shares that in the past, whenever she encountered adversity, her instinct was just to push forward at all costs: “I’d keep banging my head against the wall, over and over again,” she reveals. “I’d end up hurting myself and feeling wronged, and it made me feel like I was suffering.” She has now learned to dismantle the expectation that blind endurance was her only path forward; as she puts it: “It doesn’t always have to be one particular way. I don’t have to be so stubborn about it.” For our October cover, the star opens up about confidence, maturity, finding freedom in her own space and learning not to let other people’s expectations define her. Keep an eye out for the full cover story.

Enter “Red Redemption,” an unreleased track created specifically for Shuhua’s (@yeh.shaa_) solo stage on i-dle’s recently concluded Syncopation world tour. “I wanted to try some musical styles that I hadn’t really explored before,” she says, which explains the resulting dark, high‑tempo electronic pop landscape that not only showed fans a side of her they had not seen, but also tested her vocal boundaries. The first recordings, however, left Shuhua second‑guessing her vocal delivery; as she explains: “I felt like I didn’t have quite as much power as the original [demo track].” Her team and close friends quickly stepped in with encouragement, reminding her to stop measuring herself against the demo recording and reassuring her that her performance was completely fine just as it was, capturing exactly who she is as an artiste. “That,” she recalls, “was when I realised, ‘Oh, right. I don’t have to sing it exactly like the demo. I have my own [unique colour] too.’” If “Red Redemption” taught Shuhua to trust her own voice, the same instinct now shapes the way she lives outside the spotlight. While Shuhua has taken steps forward in her career, she has deliberately chosen to step back on the personal front. Away from the recording studios and international film festival spotlights, she has turned her focus towards reclaiming the quiet space of her home life. For now, being herself means embracing that very control—whether it means taking on a solo stage, learning from an actress she admires or transforming a balcony that once sat empty. As Shuhua puts it so simply: “That, to me, is freedom.” At the link in bio, read more about the i-dle (@i_dle_official) member’s journey as she reflects on growth, confidence, and finding freedom on her own terms.
