This is a REAL weather map for the Pacific – it looks like "The Day After Tomorrow." The storms are Lowell, Karina and Marie. Lowell became a Category 5 with 160 mph winds south of Hawaii on Wednesday; it's since fluctuated down to Category 4 strength with 145 mph eyewall winds. It's too soon to determine how close the powerful storm will come to Hawaii, but a northward turn could place the Hawaiian archipelago uncomfortably close in the next 5 to 7 days. "This is a good time for all residents to ensure they have their hurricane plan and supply kit in place," wrote the Hurricane Center. Karina, meanwhile, is 1,260 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. It's a major hurricane but will slowly weaken as it drifts northwest. Then Marie, 380 miles south of the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, will stay well offshore – but may sent a bit of remnant moisture to the U.S. West Coast early next week. According to Andrew Markowitz, Wednesday marked the first time on record when Category 4 and 5 hurricanes were simultaneously present in the eastern tropical Pacific. If you drew a line from south of Honolulu to the Baja Peninsula, you could fly through THREE different hurricanes on a five hour flight. That's absolutely bonkers. This is what you get when have a record-breaking El Niño weather pattern. It begins with a reversal of easterly trade winds near the equator; instead, light westerlies push warm surface water east. It ends up in the eastern tropical Pacific. That extra-warm blob of water heats the air above, inducing rising motion. That ascent helps tropical waves overachieve, and makes it easy for them to become powerhouse hurricanes. While Lowell looks to pass south of Hawaii, the Aloha State should closely monitor. Interestingly, the same mechanism behind the Pacific's supercharged hurricane season is leading to a very, very quiet Atlantic season. Remember all that rising air over the Pacific? What goes up must come down. The air over the Atlantic is sinking, squashing development prospects. Moreover, something called the Walker Circulation is leading to harsh upper-level winds over the Atlantic.
