Historically, libraries were known by several names, including:
The Library (Al-Maktabah) - المكتبة
The Treasury of Books (Khizānat al-Kutub) - خزانة الكتب
The House of Knowledge (Dārul-'Ilm) - دار العلم
The virtue of the library stems from the virtue of sacred knowledge itself. Through libraries, the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the works of the scholars are preserved. They safeguard the creed of Ahlus-Sunnah, preserve the Sunnah, repel innovations, and connect each generation to the inheritance of the Prophets.
The fruits of a library are immense:
Preserving the religion through preserving its sources.
Facilitating the pursuit of beneficial knowledge.
Assisting scholars and students in research and study.
Producing generations who inherit the Prophetic legacy.
Serving as an ongoing charity (ṣadaqah jāriyah) for its founder and all who contribute to it.
The subject of the student of knowledge's library is the collection of the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the books of the scholars in the various Islamic sciences, together with the instrumental sciences (ʿUlūmul-Ālah) such as Arabic grammar, morphology, rhetoric, principles of jurisprudence, and the sciences that aid in understanding the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger ﷺ. It concerns their preservation, organization, cataloguing, and accessibility.
What is a Library?
A library is an organised repository of books, manuscripts, and scholarly works established to preserve, organize, and make knowledge accessible. For the student of knowledge, it is a carefully curated collection that supports learning, research, and lifelong study.

If you have never read anything by Ibn al-Qayyim—or even if you've never read a book in your life—then let the first books you read be:
1. Al-Wābiluṣ-Ṣayyib ("The Goodly Rain")
2. Al-Fawā'id ("Benefits")
3. Al-Jawābul-Kāfī (The Sufficient Answer, also known as The Disease and the Cure)
4. Zādul-Maʿād ("Provision for the Hereafter")
For two reasons:
The first is the abundance of beneficial knowledge these books contain and every Muslim's need for them.
The second is that they are accessible to everyone. Anyone can read them and gain tremendous benefit from them, unlike some of Ibnul-Qayyim's other works, which are deeper, more advanced, and more difficult for beginners.

❐ O you in your twenties, thirties, and beyond…
By Allah, I sincerely want what is best for you.
If I could go back and live my life again, I would spend ten years of my life allowing nothing into my library—after the Qurʾān and the Sunnah—except the books and explanations of Sheikh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him).
I would listen to his lessons, read his books, summarize them, and study them carefully. Only after I had fully benefited from them would I move on to the books of the other great scholars.
The legacy of Ibn ʿUthaymīn (may Allah have mercy on him) is like a complete institute for the student of knowledge. It contains the five essential fields needed to build a strong foundation:
1. ʿAqīdah (Islamic creed)
2. Tafsīr (Explanation of the Qurʾān)
3. Ḥadīth
4. Fiqh and Uṣūl al-Fiqh (Islamic law and its principles)
5. Naḥw (Arabic grammar)
Whoever has gone through what I have gone through will come to the same conclusion.
