As of today, the Nepal flash flood situation remains critical with 469 confirmed dead and more than 1,000 still missing after Wednesday’s glacier-collapse surge down the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. Rescue operations continue but have been disrupted by a new high-risk secondary threat: a debris-dammed lake near the Nepal-Tibet border began overflowing on Friday, causing river levels to rise again in Rasuwa district and forcing a temporary 90-minute halt to helicopter work while residents moved to higher ground. China has issued a Level-IV alert and warned that the barrier lake (now holding over 2.5 million cubic metres) is overflowing, with another 3 million cubic metres expected to flow in over the next three days due to rain, creating a high risk of a full breach that could send a fresh surge downstream toward Gyirong Port and into Nepal, with peak threat around 1 September. Chinese rescue teams have withdrawn to safe distances. Additional water is expected into the unstable lakes, and major rivers are forecast to rise further. Authorities have issued high alerts for all riverbank areas in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan and Tanahun. People must stay off low-lying ground and affected highways until further notice while monitoring official NDRRMA and Chinese updates.
