A fruit fly is out here dying in Doom 6,000+ times and somehow that's the exciting part.
Google and HHMI Janelia mapped the complete brain of an adult male fruit fly, all 166,000+ neurons and 125 million synapses, and released it open source. Days later, developer Alex Wormuth wired it straight into Doom: game frames feed the fly's visual neurons, its neural activity gets mapped to controls, and taking damage sends a dopamine hit meant to teach it to survive longer.
It's not learning like an AI model does, it's a live simulation of real biological wiring reacting to a game it was never built for. You can literally watch its neurons fire in real time.
