In a couple of weeks, #AndrewGarfield returns to cinema screens in ‘The Uprising’. He plays Ploughman, a farmer whose wife and children have died in the Black Death and who, when the king’s men come looking for yet more tax money to fund foreign wars, has nothing to lose by taking a stand. It’s a story about abuses of power, the mutability of populism and shifting paradigms, and one that seems to have resonated deeply with Garfield. “There were brutal conditions for working-class people, brutal taxation post-plague, incompetence in government, abusive practices, with the underclass being seen as sub-human creatures from the perspective of those in power.” Not phenomena confined to the Middle Ages, then? It all sounds quite… now. “What was inspiring and exciting in the making of [the film] was this possibility of justice, this possibility of healing,” says the actor. At the link in bio, read the interview with our September/October cover star, who also talks about his upcoming role as OpenAI founder Sam Altman in ‘Artificial’, the secret to defeating Trump and Farage, embracing anger and what comes next.
