It is widely believed that one's attainment of success hinges entirely on serendipity. While I acknowledge that fortunate circumstances can play a role, I believe that a blanket statement of this sort is overly reductive, as it discounts other pivotal factors; in fact, it is the interplay between luck and hard work that ultimately charts the course to success.
Indisputably, it would be disingenuous to deny that chance plays a part in the equation. Being born into a stable household, having access to a first-rate education, or simply finding oneself in the right place at the right time can open doors that would otherwise remain firmly shut. An aspiring entrepreneur, for example, who happens to meet an investor at a chance social gathering may secure funding, transforming a modest idea into a thriving business. In this sense, fortuitous encounters and favorable starting conditions undeniably shape the trajectory toward achievement.
Notwithstanding the considerable weight luck carries, hard work and discipline merit equal recognition. What ultimately separates those who realize their ambitions from those who do not is the capacity to recognize an opportunity and capitalize on it with sustained effort. History is replete with examples of individuals who overcame considerable disadvantage through sheer perseverance: countless self-made entrepreneurs began with minimal resources yet built successful enterprises through diligence and relentless risk-taking. Conversely, many others who had a head start in their business because of their wealthy background failed to capitalize on that opening, squandering the advantage.
In light of these considerations, I firmly contend that singling out one factor as paramount is nothing short of a false dichotomy. It is the synergistic relationship between luck and effort that truly charts the path to success — while luck creates opportunities, hard work converts them into achievement. Bill Gates, for instance, hailed from an affluent family, yet he built a multibillion-dollar company not solely because of this advantage, but because he paired it with relentless dedication and tenacity.
In conclusion, I believe that luck is by no means the sole determinant of success; hard work carries equal importance. What truly sets apart individuals who ultimately achieve their aims is their capacity to seize the opportunities that arise from chance encounters, while simultaneously remaining disciplined and industrious.

Advocates of imposing an outright ban point to the disruptive, anti-social behaviour that has become commonplace in shared spaces. Loud phone conversations in quiet carriages, videos played without headphones, and the sheer number of people who remain oblivious to people around them precisely because their attention is fixed on a screen all contribute to a public environment that feels increasingly inconsiderate. For those who value libraries as spaces of quiet concentration or public transport as a brief respite from noise, these intrusions can understandably seem intolerable, and it is easy to see why some conclude that removing phones from the equation entirely would restore a measure of civility.
This argument, however, conflates the device with its misuse. Millions of commuters rely on their phones each day for entirely unobtrusive purposes: reading, working, checking a map, or paying a transit fare, none of which disturbs anyone. A ban aimed at eliminating a minority’s poor manners would inevitably penalize this considerate majority as well. A far more proportionate solution lies in enforceable codes of conduct – silent zones in libraries, designated quiet carriages on trains, and signage in shops requesting that calls be taken outside – paired with modest penalties for repeat offenders. Singapore's public transport network, for instance, has long relied on courtesy campaigns rather than outright prohibition, with reasonable success.
In conclusion, while the irritation behind calls for a ban is understandable, the more sensible path is to regulate behaviour rather than restrict technology. Etiquette policies, consistently enforced, would preserve the undeniable convenience phones offer while curbing the inconsiderate conduct that gave rise to the debate in the first place.
