A life lived in accordance with nature and its patterns is framed as a return to “a state of chaos” and “backwards” by believers of the progress myth. A return to the state of affairs preceding the modern world is seen as a return to a brutal, unforgiving, and inhuman existence. But an objective look at the timeline of humanity signals the exact opposite. Humans have been around for roughly 300,000 years, and in the 200 years since we’ve industrialized (representative of less than 1% of our entire lifespan as a species), we’ve irreparably damaged our biosphere, destroyed massive swaths of wild nature, artificially inflated our global presence tenfold, and nearly nuked each other several times over. This isn’t even taking into account the effects rapidly changing living conditions and ways of life have had on our collective psyche. Mental illness is rampant in every modern technologically developed country, a phenomenon that has no historical equivalent. This is because we’re still behaviorally and biologically hunter-gatherers. The human race has unintentionally crafted for itself an artificial milieu which is driving its inhabitants insane. And what effects will superintelligent AI have on us as a species? All we can be certain of is that the changes will be incredibly unpredictable, uncontrollable, and necessarily catastrophic. This stands in stark contrast to the comparatively very stable framework that the natural world provides for humans, which has ensured continuity and the maintenance of life on Earth for billions of years. Modernity is what’s chaotic, unstable, inhuman, and backwards—not natural order.
