Big promotion? No Thanks! Yesterday the CEO pulled me into a glass-walled conference room, looked me dead in the eye, and said the words every LinkedIn warrior dreams of: “We want you to be the new Global Vice President of Synergistic Excellence.” I smiled. I nodded. I politely declined. Why? Because true leadership isn’t about climbing the ladder. It’s about staying firmly on the bottom rung so you can *really* feel the vibration of the corporate carpet. I’ve spent the last 18 months mastering the sacred art of “strategic underperformance.” While others were optimizing KPIs, I was optimizing the perfect angle for my laptop camera during Zoom meetings so the fluorescent lighting hits my bald spot just right. Growth. A promotion would have forced me to: - Stop attending every optional “mindful Monday” meditation (I need those 45 minutes to stare blankly at a wall and pretend I’m visualizing Q3) - Give up my carefully cultivated reputation as “the guy who always replies ‘circling back’ and then never does” - Risk being seen as someone who actually *wants* responsibility No thank you.
