Contrary to popular belief, pretty much anyone can legally identify as ethnically British or even English. Even if they do not have a British passport. Even if they identify with another ethnicity. And they are legally protected in doing so. While I could legally classify myself as 'ethnically' English or British (pan-ethnic) under these rules, I choose not to because I adhere to the ancestral definition of ethnicity and nationality (Jus Sanguinis). I recognise the native people of the land I reside on. I identify as a British citizen to provide context on where I am located, especially when sharing my experiences. My citizenship is my legal status. My Jordanian and Palestinian roots are my identity. Thank you and God bless.

The legal definition of ethnicity in Britain is not what you think. I am ethnically Jordanian and Palestinian. I hold a British passport. While I remain strict on not calling myself English since I believe it is an actual ethnicity (ancestral), the legal definition of ethnicity in the UK was redefined in 1983. 'Ethnicity' shifted from a biological and ancestral definition to 'shared history and tradition' following the landmark 1983 House of Lords ruling in Mandla v Dowell-Lee. As a result, groups like Sikhs and jews were formally recognised as 'ethnic' groups in British law.
