The Prophet's Date of Birth and Signs Before his Birth ﷺ
- Ustadh Abdur-Rahman Hasan
Repost from Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah - Pearls of Wisdom
MEANINGS OF THE MESSENGER'S NAMES (MUHAMMAD AND AHMAD)
Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said:
"'Muhammad', is derived from the Arabic word 'Hamida'. He is called, 'Muhammad', because of the abundant good qualities that he has for which he is praiseworthy. 'Muhammad', has more meanings that pertain to praiseworthiness than, 'Mahmud'.
'Muhammad', is he who is praised more than other human beings. This is the name mentioned in the original Torah, because of the many good qualities of the Prophet (ﷺ) his religion and his Ummah (Nation), so much so, that Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) wished he was one of Muhammad's Ummah. We also mentioned evidence that supports this meaning in the aforementioned book.
'Ahmad', is also derived from the Arabic infinitive 'al-'Hamd'. There are two different meanings for 'Ahmad'. Some scholars said that it pertains to he who praises and thanks ALLĀH more than others. Therefore, 'Ahmad', is he who is the most praising among those who praise ALLĀH.
Another meaning for, 'Ahmad', is that he, among all mankind, is the most worthy of praise. In this latter meaning, 'Ahmad', becomes like, 'Muhammad', in meaning. The difference is that Muhammad indicates that he has abundant qualities for which he is praiseworthy, while Ahmad is he who is praised better than others are praised. Therefore, Muhammad is about quantity and Ahmad is about quality; it is he who deserves more praises and better praises than that of any other person.
These two names were derived from the Prophet's qualities and exalted characteristics for which he deserved to be called, 'Muhammad', and, 'Ahmad'. Residents of the heavens, residents of the earth, dwellers of this life, as well as, dwellers of the Hereafter praise Muhammad and Ahmad (ﷺ) on account of his many good qualities that are unending for those who might try to count them."

DIFFERENT VIEWS ON THE MONTH AND DAY OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD'S BIRTH
Historians and biographers disagree on the exact day and month of the Prophet's (ﷺ) birth. This uncertainty is understandable, as it was not known what status this newborn would achieve; his situation was like that of any other newborn. Thus, no one can state with certainty the date of his birth (ﷺ).
Several opinions have been mentioned on this matter, including the following:
1️⃣. That he was born on 2nd Rabi'ul-Awwal.
Ibn Kathir (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "It was said that he was born on the second of the month ˹of Rabi'ul-Awwal˺..." {As-Sīrah an-Nabawiyyah (1/199)}
2️⃣. It was said that he was born on 8th Rabi'ul-Awwal.
Ibn Kathir (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "It was said that he was born on the eighth of the month ˹of Rabi'ul-Awwal˺..." {As-Sīrah an-Nabawiyyah (1/199)}
3️⃣. It was said that he was born on 10th Rabi'ul-Awwal.
Ibn Kathir (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) mentioned:
"It was said that he was born on the tenth of the month ˹of Rabi'ul-Awwal˺..." {As-Sīrah an-Nabawiyyah (1/199)}
4️⃣. It was said that he was born on 12th Rabi'ul-Awwal.
Ibn Kathir (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "It was said that he was born on the twelfth of the month ˹of Rabi'ul-Awwal˺. This was stated by Ibn Ishaq. It was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Musannaf from 'Affan from Sa'īd ibn Mina that Jabir and Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ) was born in the Year of the Elephant on Monday 12th Rabi'ul-Awwal; on Monday his mission began, on Monday he was taken up to heaven, on Monday he migrated, and on Monday he died.
This is the well-known opinion according to the majority. And ALLĀH knows best." {As-Sīrah an-Nabawiyyah 1/199)}
5️⃣. It was said that he was born on 9th Rabi'ul-Awwal, which corresponds to 20th April 571 CE. This is what the authors of some modern books on Sīrah regard as most likely to be correct, including Professor Muhammad al-Khudari and Safi ar-Rahman al-Mubarakfuri.
Abu'l-Qasim as-Suhayli (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The mathematicians say that his birth occurred in the solar month of April, on the twentieth of that month." {Ar-Rawd al-Unuf (1/282)}
Prof. Muhammad al-Khudari (may ALLĀH have mercy on him) said: "The Egyptian astronomer Mahmoud Basha (d. 1885 CE) who was well-versed in astronomy, geography and mathematics, and wrote several books based on his research stated that it was on the morning of Monday 9th Rabi'ul-Awwal, which corresponds to 20th April 571 CE. That corresponds to the first year following the elephant incident. He was born in the house of Abu Talib in Shi'ab Banu Hashim." {Nur al-Yaqīn fi Sīrat Sayyid al-Mursalīn Page 9}. See also ar-Rahīq al-Makhtum Page 41}
It was also said that he (ﷺ) was born in Ramaḍān or in Safar or some other month.
And ALLĀH knows best.
It should be noted that celebrating the Prophet’s birthday was not prescribed by ALLĀH or by the Messenger of ALLĀH (ﷺ), nor was it celebrated by his companions who loved the Prophet (ﷺ) most. Therefore, it is not permissible for Muslims to celebrate his birthday, in obedience to the command of ALLĀH and the command of HIS Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever innovates into this matter of ours that which does not belong to it, it will be rejected." {Al-Bukhārī #2697, Muslim #1718}
He (ﷺ) also said: "Verily he among you who lives long will see great conflicts, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs), those who guide to the right way. Cling to it with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters in the religion, for verily every bid'ah (innovation) is misguidance." {Abū Dāwūd #4607}
We ask ALLĀH to protect us from bid'ah and to bless us by helping us to follow in the footsteps of those who have attained HIS pleasure.
May ALLĀH bless our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

Still think that you love the Prophet ﷺ and you're venerating and drawing nearer to him by celebrating mawlid an-Nabi?
Or that celebrating mawlid an-Nabi is a good innovation since everyone is doing it?
Perhaps you think you have good intentions and you're calling people to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ or encouraging them to read the seerah?
This interesting presentation might just change your mind entirely.

Our master Muhammad ﷺ was born in Makkah on Monday, the twelfth of Rabi' al-Awwal. He was the son of Abdullāh and Aminah al-Qurashiyyah. He is the last of the prophets and the messenger of ALLĀH, sent to all people to call them to worship ALLĀH alone and not associate anything with HIM. His father had passed away before his birth and was buried in Madinah, so he was raised by his mother. He ﷺ was breastfed after his mother by Thuwaybah al-Aslamiyyah, then Halimah al-Sa'diyyah. When he was six years old, his mother passed away, and he was taken care of by his foster mother, Umm Ayman. Thereafter, his grandfather took care of him. When he was eight years old, his grandfather passed away, so his uncle Abu Talib took care of him.
At the age of nine, he travelled with his uncle Abu Talib to Syria, where Bahīrā the monk recognized him. At the age of twenty-five, he travelled in trade for Sayyidah Khadijah, and two months after his return, he married her when she was forty years old.
At the age of thirty-five, he participated with the Quraysh in rebuilding the Kaaba and arbitrated among them in placing the Black Stone in its place. He became well-known among his people for his praiseworthy qualities, and they loved and respected him, so they called him "Al-Amīn" (the trustworthy one). ALLĀH protected him from the deeds of ignorance, and he preferred solitude as he approached forty years old. He used to worship in the cave of Hira, following the religion of his grandfather Ibrahim.

- Ustadh AbdulRahman Hasan
SUMMARY OF SĪRAH
PART 9⃣: HIS RULING (ﷺ) AMONG THE QURAYSH IN PLACING THE BLACK STONE
1⃣. In the 35th year of his life, the Quraysh demolished the Ka'bah and rebuilt it.
2⃣. He ﷺ participated with them in building it, carrying stones alongside the leaders of the Quraysh. His uncle, al-Abbas, was also with him.
3⃣. The Quraysh disagreed on who should place the Black Stone in its place, and then they agreed that the decision should be made by the first person to enter the mosque.
4⃣. So, the first person to enter was the Messenger of ALLĀH ﷺ, so the Quraysh rejoiced at this and said, "We are pleased with the trustworthy one."
5⃣. He placed the Black Stone on a robe and asked each leader to hold onto a corner of the robe. Then he instructed them to lift it, and when they reached its place, the Prophet ﷺ took it with his hand and placed it with his noble hand. His decision resolved the dispute, and the Quraysh marvelled at the strength of his thought.
