While walking in a park, Kafka met a little girl who was crying because she had lost her doll. To comfort her, he told her the doll wasnβt lostβit had gone on a journey. He promised to return with a letter from the doll the next day.
For several days, Kafka wrote letters pretending to be from the doll, describing its adventures around the world. Eventually, he gave the girl a new doll. When she said, βThis doesnβt look like my doll,β Kafka explained that the doll had changed because of its travels.
The last thing he told her was:
βEverything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way.β
βThe world will never know how much it owes to my suffering.β

βI am afraid of everything that I do not understand.β

βThere is an infinite amount of hope in the universeβ¦ but not for us.β

βYou can hold yourself back from the sufferings of the world, but perhaps this very holding back is the one suffering you could avoid.β

"You are at once both the quiet and the confusion of my heart."
