Is It Time to Sell When the #1 Market Cap Changes Hands? (A Historical Perspective)
✍️ Key Facts & Summary
SK hynix has overtaken Samsung Electronics to become the largest company in the KOSPI by market capitalization. Meanwhile, NAND memory maker Kioxia has also climbed to the top spot in Japan's equity market.
The question is whether this signals a market peak or a genuine paradigm shift. Looking at history, leadership changes at the top tend to fall into three broad categories. (The figures below are approximate and meant to illustrate the framework rather than serve as precise data.)
1. Valuation Bubble
Earnings growth failed to justify the valuation expansion. Once sentiment peaked, the stocks collapsed.
NTT (1989): Japan's asset bubble. While the broader Japanese market traded around 60x earnings, NTT reached triple-digit P/E multiples.
Korea Telecom / KT (1999): Beneficiary of the dot-com era.
Cisco (2000): Dot-com bubble. Peak valuation reached roughly 150–200x earnings. In FY2000, Cisco generated $18.9 billion in revenue and $2.67 billion in net income, yet its market cap exceeded $550 billion.
PetroChina (2007): Traded around 50–60x earnings on the Shanghai A-share market, while its Hong Kong-listed shares traded closer to 20x.
2. Cyclical Peak Earnings
Valuations were not excessive. The problem was that earnings themselves were at a cyclical peak. A low P/E ratio did not provide protection.
Exxon Mobil (2007, 2011): Traded at roughly 10–13x earnings when it became the world's largest company. It looked cheap, but profits were being boosted by peak oil prices.
3. Paradigm Shift
A technological or structural change created a new long-term winner.
Apple surpassing Exxon (2011–2012): Apple traded at roughly 13–15x earnings, sometimes even closer to 10x. Valuation was reasonable, while smartphones represented a genuine structural growth story. It was neither a bubble nor a cyclical earnings peak, leading to a decade of outperformance.
NVIDIA surpassing Apple (2024): Driven by the AI capex cycle. Initially expensive, but earnings growth rapidly caught up with valuation. So far, it appears to be a structural growth story rather than a speculative bubble.
💡 My View
Memory semiconductor companies appear to sit somewhere between Category 2 (Cyclical Peak Earnings) and Category 3 (Paradigm Shift).
As a result, the probability of a classic bubble-style collapse of 70–80%—similar to what happened after major valuation bubbles—appears relatively low.
If a strong bull market experiences a 20% correction, it is more likely to represent a buying opportunity than the beginning of a permanent decline.
The real sell signal is not necessarily the change in market-cap ranking itself. It is when management commentary and analyst expectations begin to subtly deteriorate, and earnings growth starts slowing materially.
While year-over-year growth is expected to decelerate from Q3 2026 onward, consensus earnings estimates for 2026–2028 continue to move higher.
My conclusion is that it is probably not time to sell everything, but it is also not the ideal moment to aggressively chase with leverage. This is a holder's market, not a buyer's market.

Repost from DYOR

TOSS X SOLANA
Toss is South Korea's #1 financial platform and "super-app". It was launched in 2015 by the fintech unicorn startup Viva Republica to solve the clunky, complicated nature of traditional Korean banking. Today, it is used by over 30 million people—nearly 60% of South Korea's population

pre mkt thoughts 17 Jun 26
Yields eased up a little more before FOMC. Asian markets were roughly up 1% - with SK Hynix at ATHs. $285A also sits at the top of the range at 96k.
On monday, i called it as a good area to trim some profits before the inevitable hedging that would take place pre FOMC. That has happened yesterday - that weakness is what i term as the "last opportunity to deploy before we scale the FOMC wall of worry".
The market IMO is slanted bearish. Given the easing in oil prices, i would say that the risk reward is tilted towards a dovish outcome.
If you dont understand nuance - what i mean is. Monday take some profits into strength good. Tuesday, buy this weakness. Now - SIT TIGHT AND WAIT.
Yesterday's weakness also offers up clues to what might perform - everything such as Memory, Photonics etc was hit....except Neoclouds. IMO - the neocloud sector is the most BULLISH sector to come - this is off the back of a market that is structurall short compute. Frontier models not available? good for compute. Sovereign AI buildout? Good for compute. Chinese models better? GOOD for compute. In short, the thesis for compute hinges on - IS AI MAKING MY LIFE BETTER? The answer to that is much simpler to answer than - "Is memory near a top" or whichever. There is not enough compute being built. Given that rentals command roughly a 20%+ IRR AND the fact that the depreciation schedule for GPUs is being stretched out because of inference and agentic demand .... this is the direct bull case for neoclouds. More and more people are starting to talk about it - if i had to put a finger on this - it would be roughly Nov 2025 for memory. We had early buyers continuing to bid memory as it pushed against historical valuation range highs.
Within neoclouds, there are many players. Im picking $NBIS because of Leopold's motion and their ability to monetise on spot compute prices increasing. $CRWV $CIFR $WULF are other names in the basket. $GLXY is also gaining attention.
Good luck!
