I love my friend’s artworks, I love seeing other people’s artworks, because I love how much a style screams about the person behind it. Everyone’s style is unique, and I love seeing how they take “art” and make it theirs. Why can’t I allow myself to be the same way, to let my art scream to everyone who I am. I need to refocus on myself, on making artworks I find attractive, that I find fun to do AND to look at. People used to tell me how much my art was detailed, even when my lines were rougher and less polished. I need to head back towards that. I want my art to express who I am, not who I’m trying to be.
I think, in general whenever I do things, I’m a bit rougher around the edges. I do things rapidly, I do things swiftly, I don’t really care about it not being all super tidy and clean, as long as it works in the end. I think I like how a sketch looks, how sketchy it looks, how raw it looks. I think I like the look of visible brush strokes, of seeing the steps that lead towards the finish. I like how my faces used to look, how I tried to make them hot and not just cute. I’m also a colourful person, I love to carry colours where I go.
I think that the aspect of being colourful is the only one that reflects in my art nowadays, while I’ve lost all the other bits of myself that I feel used to make my artworks more unique, more mine. While I admire others being able to draw super clean lines, super clean art styles, realistic shading and rendering, I feel like each time I try to be someone else, I end up losing myself and what makes me love art in the first place. And I feel like that reflects in the final products I’ve been putting out lately.
— Art Rant —
This summer, I've been having a ton more time to invest into art, and have been wanting to improve and push my art further. I think in that time, I've managed to make my art look cleaner, more polished, my rendering better, and cleaner. Maybe though, since two months ago ish, I've been feeling like my art's been getting less and less... interesting. Less attractive, less appealing. At least, to me.
So last month, in order to try and change that, I started asking myself a lot of questions, and asking people and other artists around on how they viewed my art and what tips they might have for improving it, or pushing it to the next level.
I think it's a good thing to know that I'm a really influenceable bean. I really care about how people see me, or the stuff that I do, and it makes me really sensitive to comments and critique. I think that's normal in this sphere, where you've gotta promote yourself and sell your work to others, but that simultaneously makes me feel like my gut feeling, or my reflexes are mainly wrong, and that mostly everyone else knows better than I do for art.
In the last month, I've received a ton of feedback. "Maybe try making your faces a bit cuter to make your art more appealing." "Maybe try to make your lines flow better with one another." "Be mindful of the empty spaces of the piece, not only the parts where there's stuff happening." "Try building your sketches and pieces differently, because the way you're doing it right now is 'wrong'." I think all of those comments have the merit of being valid, or somewhat right, and I've been trying to apply them since maybe the last month.
But it's crazy how much the aspects I focused on "fixing" (namely, my sketches / linework) feels to me like they've degraded in that time. I think they're more "good" than they used to be. But... I can't help but feel like they're less "great" than the used to be.
I’m curious about something.
Which artwork of mine is your favourite? Which one attracts you the most?
