Apparently civilisation has reached its glorious summit: scrolling, shopping and arguing with strangers online while everything our ancestors considered sacred is destroyed around us. Progress!
But what if none of this is entirely new? What if civilisations have passed through this strange process before, order giving way to disorder, virtue becoming vice and vice being paraded around in a little hat demanding applause?
From Plato, Aristotle, Yeats, Jung and Guénon to ancient myth, Weimar Germany and some wonderfully deranged corners of the occult, thinkers across thousands of years have described civilisation as something that rises, declines, reverses itself and, perhaps, begins again.
So what exactly is happening to us?
Can the Great Inversion still be stopped, or has the wheel already turned too far? I suppose that is up to you."
