The Telegraph reports that the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will meet in Cardiff tomorrow to demand the right to hold independence referendums, potentially beginning the break up of the United Kingdom.
For the first time, separatist parties govern all three nations simultaneously. They will also meet Sinn FΓ©in president Mary Lou McDonald.
Should Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland leave, the UK would effectively be reduced to England, losing around 15.5% of its population and 13.5% of its GDP, as well as:
β’ Scotlandβs nuclear submarine bases and strategic position over the GIUK Gap
β’ Essential military training grounds across all three nations
β’ Much of the North Seaβs oil, gas and offshore wind resources
β’ Its secure western flank, potentially leaving England surrounded by independent or militarily neutral neighbours
This would not merely redraw Britainβs borders; it would fundamentally diminish its military, economic and geopolitical power.
