Water has its agenda. Energy has its priorities. Food cannot wait. And neither can the climate. The challenge? Making sure our responses connect. At the 3rd Ethiopia Water and Energy Week, the Power for Food Partnership joined a high-level discussion on collective leadership and Ethiopia’s Water-Energy-Food-Climate nexus, alongside government, development and sector partners. The takeaway was clear: we cannot transform systems while keeping our efforts separate. That means coordinating policies and investments, playing complementary roles, measuring progress together and being willing to change how we work. Thank you to the panellists, presenters and moderator for a discussion that challenged us to think beyond individual initiatives. Different organisations. Complementary roles. Shared responsibility for what comes next.

From individual efforts to collective progress What does partnership look like when we are working to transform a sector together? Yesterday’s BRIDGE+ Partners Meeting brought different perspectives on Ethiopia’s dairy sector into one conversation. Presentations, a Partner Marketplace and thematic discussions provided space to reflect on progress, share learning and explore future priorities. The discussions centred on how farmers, businesses, public institutions, service providers and development partners can better connect their efforts towards sector transformation. Beyond bringing partners together, the day created space to listen, question and begin shaping what comes next. The meeting has ended, but the conversations continue.

Five days. Two sectors. One systems approach. The 3rd Ethiopian Water and Energy Week 2026 is underway at the Addis Ababa Science Museum, and SNV is proud to be a Gold Sponsor, bringing together our Water and Energy work. For us, the week is a chance to show how SNV works: looking beyond individual projects to the systems and partnerships needed for lasting change. On Energy Day, SNV Country Director Julie Graham delivered opening remarks, while Hiwote Teshome moderated the high-level panel, “Plugging the Leaks, Powering the Nation: Every Kilowatt-Hour Counts.” The discussion explored electricity losses, energy efficiency and how recovered energy can better serve people and the economy. This is SNV’s systems thinking in action: connecting actors and institutions and working through partnerships to create change that lasts. We are here throughout the five days, connecting and contributing across Water and Energy. Find us at the Addis Ababa Science Museum. www.snv.org #SystemsThinking #Water #Energy

Three days in, and SNV is right in the middle of the conversation. We are proud to be a Gold Sponsor of the 3rd Ethiopian Water and Energy Week 2026 at the Addis Ababa Science Museum, with our Water and Energy sectors coming together across the five-day programme. On Energy Day, our Country Director Julie Graham opened the day with remarks, and Hiwote Teshome moderated the high-level policy panel, “Plugging the Leaks, Powering the Nation: Every Kilowatt-Hour Counts.” From energy efficiency and electricity losses to policy, institutions, investment and partnerships, these conversations show why we believe in looking at the whole system. At SNV, we do not see transformation as the work of one project, one solution or one organisation. We connect actors, ideas and institutions, and work with partners to create the conditions for change to take root, grow and last. That is SNV’s systems thinking in action. Five days. Water and Energy. One systems approach. 📍 Find us at the Addis Ababa Science Museum as National Water and Energy Week continues. www.snv.org SNV #EthiopianWaterAndEnergyWeek #SystemsThinking #Water #Energy #EnergyEfficiency #Ethiopia

The final stop. But perhaps the beginning of a bigger question. On t he last day of Simon O’Connell’s visit to Ethiopia, together with our colleagues from Sida, we visited Awash Bank and Biruh Minds, two partners working at different points of the MSME ecosystem. At Biruh Minds, we s aw a partner that understands a fundamental principle of market systems development: lasting change comes from working with the actors who make markets move.Through the MENSH model, bus iness support, coaching and access to finance come together to help MSMEs grow and become investment-ready.At Awash Bank, cash-flow-based l ending is opening new pathways to finance beyond traditional collateral.Different actors. Different solution s. One bigger system.A fitting close to Simon’s visit — and a reminder that systems change happens when the right pieces connect.

A crop they had never grown before. 101 hectares today.  Sometimes, seeing is what makes people believe. In Dewa Chefa,Oromia Special Zone of the Amhara Region, banana was not a crop local farmers had grown before. SNV Horti-LIFE Green Growth started with a small demonstration plot, an opportunity to see whether banana could work under local conditions. It did. The experience was taken up by the government and adopted by 128 farmers, who have now expanded banana production to 101 hectares. We saw this first-hand during our recent field visit, which brought together regional, zonal and woreda leaders and experts to see how experiences on the ground are being taken forward and scaled. For us, this was one of the most interesting parts of the visit: watching something that started as a small demonstration become a 101-hectare farmer-led cluster. www.snv.org
