عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ قَالَ:

قَالَ لِي أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ [ البَاقـِر علَيْهِ السَّلامُ ] فِي أَوَّلِ دَخلَةٍ دَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ: «تَعَلَّمُوا الصِّدْقَ قَبْلَ الْحَدِيثِ».

— أصـول الكافـي

'Amr ibn Abi 'l-Miqdām said:

"The first time that I had an audience with Abū Ja'far (al.Baqer) ('a.s.) he said to me: 'Learn to be truthful before (you learn) tradition.' "

عَنِ الْهَيْثَمِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الله [عَلَيهِ السَّلام] قَالَ:

«مَنْ رَضِيَ مِنَ اللّٰه بِالْيَسِيرِ مِنَ الْمَعَاشِ رَضِيَ اللّٰه مِنْهُ بِالْيَسِيرِ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ».

al-Haytham ibn Waqid that Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s) said:

"He who is satisfied with a little subsistence from Allah, Allah (too) is satisfied with a little (good) work from him."

عَنْ أَبِي خَدِيجَةَ سَالِمِ بْنِ مُكرَمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ] قَالَ:

قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ: «مَنْ سَأَلَنَا أَعْطَيْنَاهُ، وَمَنِ اسْتَغْنَى أَغْنَاهُ اللَّهُ».

Abū Khadījah, Salim ibn Mukram that Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s) said:

"The Messenger of Allah (s.a. 'a.w.a.w.s.) said: 'He who asks us, we grant him and he who is free from need, Allah will enrich him.' "

He said: " 'Those who believed' are the Prophet (p.b.u.h.a.h.p.) and Amir al-mu'minin (p.b.u.h.), and his 'seed' the Imams and the successors, may Allah bless them. 'We shall join with them', and not diminish for 'their seed', the Proof which Muhammad (p.b.u.h.ah.p.) brought concerning 'Ali (p.b.u.h.). The Proof for them (all) is the same, and the submission of them (all) is the same."

عَن عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ كَثِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ قَالَ: قَالَ [اللَّهُ تَعَالَى]: {الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ} [الطور: 21]، قَالَ: (الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا) النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ، وَذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ الْأَئِمَّةُ وَالْأَوْصِيَاءُ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ، أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ وَلَمْ نَنْقُصْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمُ الْحُجَّةَ الَّتِي جَاءَ بِهَا مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ فِي عَلِيٍّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ، وَحُجَّتُهُمْ وَاحِدَةٌ وَطَاعَتُهُمْ وَاحِدَةٌ.

Abdu 'r-Rahman ibn Kathir that Abu 'Abdillah (p.b.u.h.) said: "He (Allah) said: Those who believed, and their seed followed them in belief, We shall join their seed with them, and We shall not de-fraud them of aught of their work" (at-Tür, 52:21).

عَنْ مُفَضَّلِ بْنِ يَزِيد قَالَ: قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ]:

«أَنْهَاكَ عَنْ خَصْلَتَيْنِ فِيهِمَا هَلَاكُ الرِّجَالِ: أَنْ تَدِينَ اللَّهَ بِالْبَاطِلِ، وَتُفْتِيَ النَّاسَ بِمَا لَا تَعْلَم».

Mufaddal ibn Mazyad as saying, "Abu Abdillah (p.b.u.h.) addressed (me) thus:

'I restrain you from two propensities as they bring all mankind to grief. Firstly, not to resort to wrong ways regarding your divine religion. Secondly, not to pronounce any verdict without knowledge before the people without knowing it.' "

عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي عَلِيٍّ اللهبِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ] قَالَ:

«إِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَيُعْطِي العَبْدَ مِنَ الثَّوَابِ عَلَى حُسْنِ الخُلُقِ كَمَا يُعْطِي المُجَاهِدَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ يَغْدُو عَلَيْهِ وَيَرُوحُ».

'Alī ibn Abi 'Alī al-Lahabī that Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s.) said:

"Certainly, Allah, the Blessed, the Sublime, will reward the servant for good character as He will reward someone who struggles in the way of Allah every morning and night."

عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ الْبَختَرِيِّ قَالَ:

كُنتُ عِنْدَ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [علَيْهِ السَّلامُ] وَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ لِي: «تُحِبُّهُ؟» فَقُلْتُ: نَعَمْ فَقَالَ لِي: «وَلم لَا تُحِبُّهُ وَهُوَ أَخُوكَ وَشَرِيكُكَ فِي دِينِكَ وَعَوْنُكَ عَلَى عَدُوِّكَ وَرِزْقُهُ عَلَى غَيْرِكَ!».

Hafş ibn al-Bakhtarī said:

"I was in the presence of Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s) when a man entered. He ['a.s.] said to me: 'Do you like him? I said: 'Yes.' He ['a.s.] said to me: 'Why shouldn't you like him when he is your brother, a partner in your religion, your helper against your enemy, and his sustenance is upon someone else.!'"

عَنْ جَمِيلٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [عَليْه السَّلامُ] قَالَ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ‌:

«الْمُؤْمِنُونَ خَدَمٌ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ» قُلْتُ: وَكَيْفَ يَكُونُونَ خَدَماً بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ؟ قَالَ: «يُفِيدُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضاً».

Jamīl that Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s) said: I [Jamīl] heard him saying:

"Believers are of service to each other." I said: "How can they be of service to each other?" He ['a.s.] said: "They are of benefit to each other..."

عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [علَيْه السَّلامُ] يَقُولُ‌:

«إِنَّ الْعَمَلَ الدَّائِمَ الْقَلِيلَ عَلَى الْيَقِينِ أَفْضَلُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ الْكَثِيرِ عَلَى غَيْرِ يَقِينٍ».

Hisham ibn Sälim said: "I heard Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s.) saying:

'Continuous little deed based on certainty, is better in the sight of Allah than numerous deed based on other than certainty.' "

And the most lovable among My creation is the person who guards himself against evil seeking My maximum rewards, attaches himself to the learned, follows the path of the patient and the for-bearing, and always accepts the words of the wise."

عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ (عَلَيْهِما السَّلَامُ) قَالَ:

«لَوْ يَعْلَمُ النَّاسُ مَا فِي طَلَبِ الْعِلْمِ لَطَلَبُوهُ وَلَوْ بِسَفْكِ الْمُهَجِ، وَخَوْضِ اللُّجَجِ؛ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى أَوْحَى إِلَى دَانِيَالَ: انَّ أَمْقَتَ عَبِيدِي إِلَيَّ الْجَاهِلُ الْمُسْتَخِفُّ بِحَقِّ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ، التَّارِكُ لِلِاقْتِدَاءِ بِهِمْ، وَانَّ أَحَبَّ عَبِيدِي إِلَيَّ التَّقِيُّ الطَّالِبُ لِلثَّوَابِ الْجَزِيلِ، اللَّازِمُ لِلْعُلَمَاءِ، التَّابِعُ لِلْحُلَمَاءِ، الْقَابِلُ عَنِ الْحُكَمَاءِ».

Abi Hamzah (-) 'Ali ibn al-Husayn (p.b.u.t.) as saying: "Had the people known the real worth of the acquisition of knowledge they would have acquired it even if they had to pay for it with a bleeding heart or if they had to dive in the deep seas. Almighty Allah revealed to Daniyal (the prophet), 'Most wretched among My creation is the rustic who makes light of the learned and stops following them.

عَنْ مَعْمّرِ بْنِ خَلَّادٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الرِّضَا [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ] يَقُولُ:

لَيْسَتِ الْعِبَادَةُ كَثْرَةَ الصَّلَاةِ وَالصَّوْمِ، إِنَّمَا الْعِبَادَةُ التَّفَكُّرُ فِي أَمْرِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.

Mu'ammar ibn Khallad said: "I heard Abu 'l-Hasan ar-Ridā ('a.s.) as saying:

'Worship is not by excess of prayer and fast. In fact, worship is thinking about the command of Allah, to Whom belong Might and Majesty.'"

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ الْقَدَّاحِ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) قَالَ: قالَ:

« إِنَّ هٰذَا الْعِلْمَ عَلَيْهِ قُفْلٌ، وَمِفْتَاحُهُ الْمَسْأَلَةُ ».

Abdullah ibn Maymun al-Qaddah (-) Abu Abdillah (p.b.u.h.) as saying:

"Verily, knowledge is under a lock, the key of which is interrogation"

'Alī ibn Abī Hamzah said: "I heard Abū Başīr asking Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s.) and said to him: 'May I be made your ransom! Inform me about the religion which Allah, to Whom belong Might and Majesty, made incumbent upon the servants [al-'ibād] that it is not allowed for them to remain ignorant of it, and it will not be accepted from them beside that. What is that [religion]?' He ['a.s.] said: 'Repeat it [the question] for me.' So, I repeated it for him. He ['a.s.] said: 'Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (ş.a. 'a.w.a.) is the Messenger of Allah, performing the ritual prayer, giving the alms, making pilgrimage to the House if he is able to make his way there and fasting during the month of Ramadan.' Then he ['a.s.] was silent for a bit. Then he said: 'And al-wilāyah,' twice. He ['a.s.] then said: 'This is what Allah had made incumbent upon the servants, and the Lord will not question the servants, on the Day of Reckoning, saying: "Why did you not add to what I had made incumbent upon you?' But whoever adds to that, Allah [s.w.a.] will increase His reward for him. Surely, the Messenger of Allah (s.a. 'a.w.a.) had prescribed certain good and sanctified practices, that people are ought to take hold of them.""

عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُهُ يَسْأَلُ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ [عليه السَّلام] فَقَالَ لَهُ: جُعِلْتُ فِدَاكَ! أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الدِّينِ الَّذِي افْتَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ مَا لَا يَسَعُهُمْ جَهْلُهُ وَلَا يُقْبَلُ مِنْهُمْ غَيْرُهُ مَا هُوَ؟ فَقَالَ: «أَعِدْ عَلَيَّ» فَأَعَادَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ: «شَهَادَةُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّداً رَسُولُ اللَّهِ [صلى الله عليه وآله] وَإِقَامُ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءُ الزَّكَاةِ وَحِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلًا وَصَوْمُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ» ثُمَّ سَكَتَ قَلِيلًا ثُمَّ قَالَ: «وَالْوَلَايَةُ» مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ: «هَذَا الَّذِي فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ وَلَا يَسْأَلُ الرَّبُّ الْعِبَادَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَيَقُولَ أَلَّا زِدْتَنِي‌ عَلَى مَا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْكَ وَلَكِنْ مَنْ زَادَ زَادَهُ اللَّهُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ [صلى الله عليه وآله] سَنَّ سُنَناً حَسَنَةً جَمِيلَةً يَنْبَغِي لِلنَّاسِ الْأَخْذُ بِهَا».

عَنْ ثَعْلَبَةَ بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، عَمَّنْ حَدَّثَهُ، عَنْ أَحَدِهِمَا (الباقـِر أو الصَّـادق عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ) قَالَ: « إِنَّ اللَّهَ رَفِيقٌ يُحِبُّ الرِّفْقَ، وَمِنْ رِفْقِهِ بِكُمْ تَسْلِيلُ أَضْغَانِكُمْ وَمُضَادَّةُ قُلُوبِكُمْ، وَإِنَّهُ لَيُرِيدُ تَحْوِيلَ الْعَبْدِ عَنِ الْأَمْرِ فَيَتْرُكُهُ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَحُولَهُ بِالنَّاسِخِ، كَرَاهِيَةَ تَثَاقُلِ الْحَقِّ عَلَيْهِ ».

Tha'labah ibn Maymün (-) whoever narrated it to him that one of the two (Imāms i.e., al-Baqir or aş-Şadiq, 'a.s.) said:

"Indeed, Allah is gentle and likes gentleness. Of his gentleness is to wipe off grudges and animosities of your hearts. In fact, He intends for his servant to turn from an affair, so he leaves it upon him until he turns it into abrogation, so that the truth may not press him."

عَنْ أَبِي طَالِبٍ القُمِّيِّ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللهِ [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ] قَالَ: قُلْتُ: «أَجْبَرَ اللهُ العِبَادَ عَلَى المَعَاصِي؟»، قَالَ: «لَا»، قُلْتُ: «فَفَوَّضَ إِلَيْهِمُ الأَمْرَ؟»، قَالَ: «لَا»، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: «فَمَاذَا؟»، قَالَ: «لُطْفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكَ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ».

Abu Talib al-Qummi (-) a person (unknown) as saying: "I inquired of Abū 'Abdillah (p.b.u.h.), 'Has Alláh compelled mankind to sin? The Imam replied, 'No. I further inquired, 'Has Allah entrusted all affairs (powers) to mankind? The Imam replied, No.' I further inquired, "Then what is the truth? The Imam replied, 'Your Lord has put the things in a delicate balance between the two (i.e., compulsion and endowment of powers)."

عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَصْحَابِ أَمِيرِ اَلْمُؤْمِنِينَ [عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ] قَالَ: قَالَ أَمِيرُ اَلْمُؤْمِنِينَ [عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ] :

«اِعْلَمُوا أَنَّ صُحْبَةَ اَلْعَالِمِ وَاِتِّبَاعَهُ دِينٌ يُدَانُ اَللَّهُ بِهِ وَطَاعَتَهُ مَكْسَبَةٌ لِلْحَسَنَاتِ مَمْحَاةٌ لِلسَّيِّئَاتِ وَذَخِيرَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرِفْعَةٌ فِيهِمْ فِي حَيَاتِهِمْ وَجَمِيلٌ بَعْدَ مَمَاتِهِمْ».

Abú Ishaq that one of the companions of Amir al-mu'minin (p.b.u.h.) said: "Amir al-mu'minin (p.b.u.h.) said:

'Know that keeping company with a Learned-person (al-'alim) and following him is the religion through which Allah is served. Obedience to him results in deeds which are rewarded, and effaces evil deeds. It is a provision for the believers, a high point for them in their (worldly) life and a good mention after their death.' "

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سِنَانٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ (عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ) قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ):

« أَمَرَنِي رَبِّي بِمُدَارَاةِ النَّاسِ كَمَا أَمَرَنِي بِأَدَاءِ الْفَرَائِضِ ».

'Abdullah ibn Sinãn that Abū 'Abdillah ('a.s.) said:"The Messenger of Allah (s.a. 'a.w.a.w.s.) said:

'My Lord commanded me to be affable to people as he commanded me to perform my religious duties.'"
