| 5 | How a ranker is born
A ranker is made on some ordinary evening in October, writing their twentieth answer. By then the hand knows where the intro should stop, the eye knows what 250 words looks like, and the right example comes to mind on its own.
That is the whole point: answer writing is a skill, not knowledge. Knowledge can be revised in a week. A skill takes months, and while you build it, nothing shows on any scorecard. You cannot learn it in the eighty days after Prelims, because those days are only for remembering, not for learning.

Theme wise PYQ preparation would have helped in Essay paper although marks would entirely depend upon the depth of arguments, new perspectives, creative expression and extensive practice.

However, your performance will depend upon the techniques of revision you use.
Having read multiple research studies on memory and its processes (courtesy psychology optional), I’m going to tell you the most effective technique for maximum memory retention.
Stop re reading. Do this instead.
1. Look at only the topic name. Close the notes.
2. Give yourself 60 seconds. Write the skeleton from memory i.e intro line, all body points, way forward, conclusion.
3. Now open the notes. See what you missed.
4. Mark that gap. Move on.
The topics you failed to recall are your real revision list. Nothing else is.
