A United Nations inquiry into the first few months of the war in Gaza has found both Israel and Hamas committed war crimes and grave violations of international law, in the body’s first in-depth investigation into the October 7 attacks and the ensuing conflict. The damning reports which cover events up to the end of 2023, paint an alarming picture of both sides routinely disregarding international law in a devastating conflict that has now raged for more than eight months, bitterly dividing global opinion and sending tensions soaring across the Middle East. Closely following a planet-friendly diet of mostly fruits, vegetables and whole grains reduces the risk of premature death by nearly one-third in people, while also dramatically cutting the release of greenhouse gases devastating the planet, a new study found. Food production plays a major role in the climate crisis. Raising livestock for human consumption, for example, uses an enormous amount of agricultural land and contributes to deforestation, biodiversity loss and water pollution, experts say. Eating a planet-healthy diet, however, cut land use by 51%, greenhouse gas emissions by 29% and fertilizer use by 21%, while also extending the lives of people, according to the study. A federal jury has convicted Hunter Biden on all three federal felony gun charges he faced, concluding that he violated laws meant to prevent drug addicts from owning firearms. The conviction marks the first time a president’s immediate family member has been found guilty of a crime during their father’s term in office, though his crimes predate Joe Biden’s tenure as president. The jury returned guilty verdicts on all three charges, which stemmed from a revolver Hunter Biden bought in October 2018 at a Delaware gun shop. The first two counts were for lying about his drug use on a federal background check form, and the third count was for possessing a gun while addicted to, or using, illegal drugs. Activists from an animal rights group have vandalized the first official portrait of King Charles currently on display in a London gallery. Activists covered the king's head with a sign of British cartoon character, Wallace from the "Wallace and Gromit" comedy series. A speech bubble sign was then tacked onto the painting with the following caption: "No cheese Gromit, look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms." The action was designed to bring attention to the group's report, which it described as a "damning investigation" into 45 farms assured by animal welfare charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The owner of the gallery displaying the portrait told CNN it sustained "no damage" and was protected by a layer of Perspex, a transparent thermoplastic. The painting, which is the first official portrait of King Charles as monarch, raised eyebrows when it was officially unveiled earlier this year. "We have the Israelis right where we want them," Sinwar told Hamas' political leadership in Qatar recently, according to one of the messages, the WSJ reported Monday. The date of the message isn't clear but suggests that Sinwar is pressing for the war to continue. The WSJ said it reviewed dozens of messages sent to ceasefire negotiators from Sinwar, who has been in hiding since the October 7 attack on Israel which sparked a devastating war on Gaza, killing more than 37,000 people in the enclave, according to Gaza health authorities, and leaving much of the strip destroyed. An Austrian Airlines plane was badly damaged by hail when the airborne jet hit a “thunderstorm cell,” Austrian Airlines said. The plane with 173 passengers and six crew onboard from Palma de Mallorca in Spain to Vienna, Austria landed safely at Vienna. A mayday emergency call was made during the flight, says Austrian. Carlos Alcaraz won his third grand slam title and first at the French Open on Sunday, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in a thrilling contest. With the victory, the 21-year-old Alcaraz becomes the youngest man to claim a grand slam title on every surface, having won the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon last year. He came through a tense match against Zverev on Court Philippe-Chatrier to add to his collection of trophies, rallying from two sets to one down in impressive fashion. Alcaraz is the youngest man to triumph at the French Open since compatriot Rafael Nadal won the third of his 14 singles titles in 2007. Nvidia, Wall Street's favorite artificial intelligence darling, is continuing to swell to staggering heights. The AI chipmaker's market capitalization rose to $3.019 trillion on Wednesday, nudging slightly past Apple's also $2.99 trillion market cap and making it the second-largest publicly traded company in the US by that measure, just behind Microsoft's market cap of $3.15 trillion. A Georgia appeals court has halted the election subversion conspiracy case against former President Donald Trump and several of his co-defendants until a panel of judges rules on whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis should be disqualified. Israel has transferred hundreds of Palestinian detainees out of the shadowy detention facility of Sde Teiman in Israel's Negev desert, a state attorney told Israel's Supreme Court on Wednesday during a first-ever hearing about the facility where prisoners from Gaza have allegedly been held under conditions of extreme abuse. The hearing comes in response to a petition by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel and other human rights groups, which drew heavily on CNN reporting about the makeshift prison to make a case for it to be shut down. A Boeing spacecraft carrying two NASA astronauts is on its historic maiden voyage. The landmark launch kicked off the first crewed test flight of the capsule and marked the culmination of a long and trying development process. The planet just marked a “shocking” new milestone, enduring 12 consecutive months of unprecedented heat, according to new data from Copernicus, the European Union’s climate monitoring service. Every single month from June 2023 to May 2024 was the world’s hottest such month on record, Copernicus data showed. Copernicus released its data the same day as United Nations Secretary General António Guterres made an impassioned speech in New York about climate change, slamming fossil fuel companies as the “godfathers of climate chaos” and, for the first time, explicitly calling on all countries to ban advertising their fossil fuel products. Israel has transferred hundreds of Palestinian detainees out of the shadowy detention facility of Sde Teiman in Israel’s Negev desert, a state attorney told Israel’s Supreme Court during a first-ever hearing about the facility where prisoners from Gaza have allegedly been held under conditions of extreme abuse. State attorney Aner Helman told the court that 700 inmates had been moved to Ofer military facility in the occupied West Bank, with another 500 set to be transferred in the weeks to come. Around 200 detainees will remain in Sde Teiman, said Helman, who added that the state would provide an update on their status within three days.
