A stricter abortion law is set to take effect in Florida — dropping the state’s 15-week ban to a six-week ban — and it will likely affect thousands of people seeking abortion care within the first month alone. Florida has become a key abortion access point amid widespread restrictions that have taken hold in the region in the two years since the US Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade. It’s also one of the country’s most populous states. Last year, 1 of every 3 abortions in the South — and about 1 in every 12 nationwide — happened in Florida, according to data from the Guttmacher Institute. Iraqi social media star Ghufran Sawadi, better known as Umm Fahad, was shot dead outside her home in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, a Baghdad police source told CNN. The attack was captured on video by a surveillance camera and shared on social media. The video shows a gunman riding a motorcycle shooting and killing Sawadi on the spot. A Baghdad police source confirmed the authenticity of the video to CNN. The country's Interior Minister announced that it was "forming a specialized work team to find out the circumstances of the killing of a woman known on social media by unknown assailants." South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a vice presidential contender, has defended actions described in her upcoming book in which she killed a dog and goat on her family farm. According to an excerpt of the book, which was obtained by The Guardian, the Republican governor and potential running mate of former President Donald Trump made the decision to put the dog down by shooting her in a gravel pit after the dog attacked a local family’s chickens and bit her. The Guardian also quotes excerpts of the book in which Noem shoots a goat in the same manner. Noem has since shared a post on X that reads, “We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm. Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years.” She later issued another post that said the incident was a “20 year old story” and added, “The fact is, South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down. This November, many voters across the country could take to the polls to determine the future of abortion access in their state, with organizers working to secure a wave of measures on the 2024 ballot aimed at restoring or protecting the right to an abortion – and a few aimed at restricting it. Abortion rights advocates hope the effort will restore the issue of reproductive health access to the people, after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, eliminating the national right to an abortion. Most of the proposed ballot measures aim to enshrine the right to an abortion in state constitutions. They follow a series of restrictive trigger laws that went into effect following the Dobbs decision, along with abortion policies that were handed down by politicians or decided by state supreme courts since the decision. Some are up against a handful of counter measures aimed at restricting abortion access, though similar restrictive measures have failed in the few states where votes have been held in the past couple of years. It did, indeed, feel a little tired. As a life-long fan of Swift's music, I wasn't impressed. "One week later, my view of the album has entirely reversed. After spending more time with the two-hour sonic feast, more methodically touring through its subtleties and nuances, I am ready to declare that it is one of Swift's best works yet. Anecdotally, it seems others are also identifying with this experience, initially expressing tepid feelings toward the album, and then realizing after a few listens it has really grown on them." College campuses across the United States have erupted in recent days with pro-Palestinian protests. Several schools have called on police to remove protesters, with hundreds being detained or arrested across multiple campuses. Tensions on many campuses have risen since Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel left more than 1,200 dead and dozens taken hostage. Israel's retaliatory assault on Gaza has killed more than 34,000 people, according to Gaza's health ministry.
