A dramatic operation to save the lives of more than 100 pilot whales ended in partial success on Thursday after wildlife officials managed to return most of the stranded animals to sea. Rescue teams rushed to the beach located in the coastal town of Dunsborough, south of Perth, to tend to the whales. After a total of 160 whales were beached, 130 were returned to the sea, according to the Parks and Wildlife Service in Western Australia. However, at least 28 whales died. Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation on Thursday, handing power over to a transitional council that will seek to gain control of the violence-ravaged nation. Henry wrote in his resignation letter dated Wednesday that, "given the current state of affairs," the time was right for him to step down. "We have served the nation in difficult times. I thank everyone who had the courage to face such challenges with me," he said. A grand jury in Arizona has handed up an indictment against former President Donald Trump’s allies over their efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, including the fake electors from that state and several individuals connected to his campaign. Airline canceled your flight? The plane arrived hours late after a maintenance issue? The inflight Wi-Fi didn’t work? New federal rules say travelers deserve cash refunds when inconvenienced by their airline – not vouchers or travel credits. “From now on when your flight is canceled for any reason, you are entitled to an automatic cash refund and it has to be prompt,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told CNN’s John Berman on Wednesday. “If you get delayed significantly, that means three hours domestically, six hours internationally, or if there’s another significant change to your itinerary — like maybe you were going to go into one airport, they actually changed the airport on you or something like that — you’re going to get your money back.” The rules, announced by the Transportation Department on Wednesday, also require airlines to provide upfront information about fees for baggage and changing flights. A yellow-orange haze of dust from the Sahara desert blanketed parts of Greece, creating spectacular scenes and prompting authorities to issue health warnings. The Greek meteorological service said weather conditions had favored the movement of dust from Africa and this was showing up in “increased concentrations in the atmosphere,” particularly in the south of the country. Britain’s Prince and Princess of Wales have released a new photo of Prince Louis to mark his sixth birthday, the first image to be released by the family since a photo-editing scandal erupted last month. In the photo, Louis – who is fourth in line to the British throne – can be seen grinning at the camera lying on a blanket. A royal source said the Waleses were grateful for the birthday messages they have received for Louis and the photo was taken by Kate, 42, in the last few days in Windsor. “This is in an unprecedented time for the Wales family as the princess continues her recovery,” the source said.

Teenage Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju, better known as Gukesh D, became the youngest player to claim the men’s Candidates Tournament in Toronto, Canada. The 17-year-old grandmaster’s win sets up an opportunity to dethrone reigning world champion Ding Liren of China at the 2024 World Chess Championship later this year. Gukesh is set to become the youngest player ever to challenge for a world chess title. Should Gukesh beat Ding, he will break Garry Kasparov’s long-held record of being the youngest world champion aged 22.
