Over three years, a photographer tracked more than 300 sites of fatal police shootings. In 2015 alone, 1,146 people died during or after interactions with law enforcement officials in the US. In 2016, the death toll was 1,093, per "The Counted," a special report and database from The Guardian. (In both years, the vast majority of deaths were classified as due to gunshot wounds, with a small number of fatalities after individuals were tased, struck by police vehicles or reported as a "death in custody.") For the photographer Diana Matar, seeking to memorialize these deaths — and the liminal spaces they represent — proved overwhelming to consider as a project, even at a smaller scale. She narrowed her focus down to four states; California and Texas, because they had the highest number of such incidents across the country, and Oklahoma and New Mexico because they consistently had some of the highest rates per capita. "I thought I could photograph (where) every encounter happened in two years in these four states, and it just became impossible," Matar told CNN. "Timewise, financially, in every possible way." Catherine, Princess of Wales, joined other royals on the balcony of Buckingham Palace Saturday for the King's official birthday, capping her first public appearance since being diagnosed with cancer. Tsunamis are powerful sets of waves caused by a disruption under the ocean’s surface, most often triggered by earthquakes. "I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days," the Princess, who is often known as Kate, said in a personal message released on Friday. "On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well." The ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula has long been associated with human sacrifice, with hundreds of bones unearthed from temples, a sacred sinkhole and other underground caverns. A long-held misconception is that the victims were often young and female. A new analysis, based on ancient DNA from the remains of 64 people who archaeologists believe had been ritually sacrificed and then deposited in an underground chamber, found the victims were all young boys, many of whom were closely related. Chaos broke out in the Italian parliament after a lawmaker was attacked while trying to hand an Italian flag to another lawmaker over a local government bill.

House Republicans voted Wednesday to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over the audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interviews with former special counsel Robert Hur, who investigated Biden’s handling of classified material and declined to bring charges. The vote marks a major escalation in a monthslong dispute over the recordings between House Republicans and the executive branch that came after Biden asserted executive privilege over the files. Ahead of the vote, Garland released an op-ed declaring that he would not be intimidated by “baseless, personal and dangerous” attacks, echoing the defiant stance he had while being grilled by Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month.
