The Internal Revenue Service detailed its plans Thursday to significantly ramp up audit rates of wealthy taxpayers and large corporations, using funds provided by the Democrat-backed Inflation Reduction Act that passed in 2022. The audit rate of taxpayers earning more than $10 million is expected to increase by 50%, going up from 11% in 2019 to 16.5% in 2026. The IRS also plans to triple the audit rates of large corporations with assets over $250 million, as well as increase the audit rates of business partnerships with assets over $10 million by tenfold over the seven-year period. Scientists working in Indonesia have observed an orangutan intentionally treating a wound on their face with a medicinal plant, the first time this behavior has been documented. Rakus, a male Sumatran orangutan, treated a wound on his face by chewing leaves from a climbing plant named Akar Kuning and repeatedly applying the juice to it, according to a paper published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday. Rakus then covered the wound with the chewed up leaves, which are used in traditional medicine to treat illnesses like dysentery, diabetes and malaria, said scientists. Study lead author Isabelle Laumer, a post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior, told CNN that the team were "very excited" by their observations, which took place in June 2022 in the Suaq Balimbing research area in Gunung Leuser National Park, Indonesia. Sebastian Steudtner has dedicated his life to surfing the biggest waves in the world. In 2020, he set a world record after riding a 26.21-meter (86-foot) behemoth, but the German may have beaten his own mark after a “special” day in February when he rode a wave provisionally measured at 28.57 meters (93.72 feet). Both the interior and exterior of the house was recreated to look like the home from the Disney/Pixar movie "Up." A crane will lift the home off the ground for the overnight stay. The United Methodist Church overturned its 40-year ban on gay clergy Wednesday, during a meeting of the church's top legislative body in Charlotte, North Carolina. The church has long been divided into factions over its stance on homosexuality and gay clergy and even weighed splitting into two separate churches over the issue, CNN previously reported. The church had maintained a ban on clergy members who were "self-avowed practicing homosexuals" since 1984, and later added performing or celebrating same-sex unions to "a list of chargeable offenses that could result in a church trial," according to a timeline of the church's history with the LGBTQ community. But Wednesday's vote marked a dramatic shift in the United Methodist Church stance on homosexuality. In a 692-51 vote the church's legislative body passed several rules without debate, including overturning both its ban on gay clergy and the penalties for holding same-sex marriages, according to the United Methodist News service. Dozens of Columbia students are occupying Hamilton Hall, one of the campus buildings also occupied during 1968 student protests against the Vietnam War, according to a social media post early Tuesday from Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine. Protesters made their way from the West Lawn encampment to Hamilton Hall overnight, just hours after the university said it had begun suspending students who refused to leave the encampment before 2pm Monday. Twenty people, including at least one infant and a toddler, have died following an Israeli airstrike over Rafah, Gaza, overnight into Monday, according to hospital officials. A video filmed for CNN in the hospital courtyard shows several body bags laid on the ground with dozens of anguished people including men, women and children crowded around their late loved ones. People are seen crouching over the body bags, with some caressing their loved one’s lifeless bodies. At least one baby’s head can be seen sticking out of a bag, as the woman beside it shouts: “My whole family has perished.” The baby’s uncle, Mahmoud Abu Taha, was carrying the 1-year-old’s lifeless body while talking to the camera, saying his parents had tried having children for 10 years before he was born. The death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to at least 34,454 following 205 days of war between Israel and Hamas, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported.
