Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan and Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva have landed in the United States, following the biggest prisoner exchange between Russia and the West since the Cold War. The returnees were greeted with tears and embraces by their joyous families at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were also on the tarmac to welcome them after their plane touched down some 20 minutes before midnight on Thursday. She's done it again. Simone Biles has won the gold in a dramatic women's all-around final at the Olympic Games in Paris. Brazil's Rebeca Andrade took home silver and Sunisa Lee, Biles' teammate, took bronze. After the competition, Biles displayed her "G.O.A.T." necklace, and she and Lee ran the floor together with an American flag. Andrade grabbed the green-and-yellow flag of Brazil and made a lap of the entire arena floor with her teammate, celebrating her silver medal with the throngs of Brazilian fans who made the trip. It was a moment of exultation after an incredibly tense night in one of the most dramatic finals of these Olympics. Two Al Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike on July 31, the network reports. Ismail Al-Ghoul and his cameraman Rami Al-Rifi, both age 27, were reporting from al-Shati refugee camp in Gaza, close to the home of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran earlier that day. US officials have confirmed the biggest prisoner exchange since the Cold War following complicated — and delicate — behind-the-scenes negotiations between the United States, Russia, Belarus and Germany. "Not since the Cold War has there been a similar number of individuals exchanged in this way and there has never, so far as we know, been an exchange involving so many countries, so many close US partners and allies working together," National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters. Twenty-four prisoners were released and seven countries were involved in the exchange. In an Olympic competition where participants generally use all the available equipment at their disposal to get ahead, Turkey’s Yusuf Dikeç offered a masterclass in nonchalance during the air pistol mixed team competition – and went viral for it. A layer of diamonds up to 11 miles thick could be tucked below the surface of Mercury, the solar system's smallest planet and the closest to the sun, according to new research. The diamonds might have formed soon after Mercury itself coalesced into a planet about 4.5 billion years ago from a swirling cloud of dust and gas, in the crucible of a high-pressure, high-temperature environment.
