A student athlete is no longer enrolled at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania after they allegedly etched a racial slur onto the chest of a teammate, school officials say. Several students were attending an informal gathering of the swim team at an on-campus residence on September 6 when one of them used a box cutter to scratch the n-word on another student's chest, according to statements made by the college and the family who says their son was the victim. "The reprehensible act was committed by a fellow student-athlete, someone he considered his friend, someone whom he trusted," the family said in an anonymous statement published last week by the college's student newspaper, The Gettysburgian. It's unclear whether the swimmer was expelled or faced other disciplinary action from the college. Jamie Yates, a spokeswoman for the college, told CNN she could only describe the student's status as "no longer enrolled" due to student privacy laws. Students and residents in Cleves, Ohio, were told to evacuate after a dangerous chemical began leaking from a railcar. Authorities said a pressure release valve on the car was leaking styrene, a toxic and flammable chemical that is used to make plastic and rubber. It can cause headaches, nausea and respiratory issues, and long-term exposure can lead to more serious health problems including organ damage.

A new study has found that typically solitary octopuses can actually work with fish to hunt and will punch them if they do not cooperate.

Meryl Streep addressed the UN General Assembly about how women's rights have deteriorated under Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Since it returned to power in 2021, the Taliban has closed secondary schools for girls, banned women from attending university and working at NGOs, restricted their travel without a male chaperone, and banned them from public spaces such as parks and gyms. Last month, the hardline Islamist rulers brought in new vice and virtue laws, which include rules against women singing in public.

Another home has collapsed into the water of the Outer Banks in North Carolina along a beach that is rapidly eroding. It is the third house that has collapsed since Friday, according to the National Park Service.

Swiss police have arrested several people after a controversial futuristic-looking capsule designed to allow its occupant to die by suicide was used for the first time, authorities said. A spokesperson for the group behind the capsule, The Last Resort, said the deceased was a 64-year-old American woman who had been suffering from a severely compromised immune system. Prosecutors in Schaffhausen have opened criminal proceedings against several people for “inducing and aiding and abetting suicide,” a police statement said, adding several people were detained, without giving details about them or the deceased. Florian Willet, co-president of The Last Resort, was among the four detainees, along with a Dutch journalist and two Swiss people, the spokesperson said. Willet was the only other person present when the woman ended her life, the spokesperson said. The contest, in its ninth edition, celebrates the beauty of birds while also highlighting the threats they face. Canadian photographer Patricia Homonylo took away the grand prize with a devastating image showing more than 4,000 birds that were killed after collisions with windows or reflective surfaces in Toronto. Conservation is one of the key drivers for the annual competition, which is partnered with Birds on the Brink, a charity that provides funding to grassroots bird conservation projects around the world. According to the latest State of the World's Birds report by BirdLife International, nearly half of the planet's bird species are in decline and one in eight species is threatened with extinction.
