For 85 years, Susie Williams Carter believed her brother was guilty of the crime he'd been convicted of and executed for: the brutal murder of a White woman at a Pennsylvania youth detention center. The wreck of one of the most storied US Navy submarines of World War II has been found in the South China Sea eight decades after its last patrol, the Navy's History and Heritage Command said Thursday. The USS Harder lies under 3,000 feet of water off the northern Philippine island of Luzon, sitting upright and intact except for damage behind its conning tower from a Japanese depth charge, the NHHC said in a press release. Harder was lost in battle on August 24, 1944, along with its entire crew of 79 submariners, while on its sixth patrol of the war, as the US sought to retake the Philippines from occupying Japanese forces. Kabosu, the dog that launched countless "doge" memes, has died, her owner announced Friday. The Japanese Shiba Inu "fell into a deep sleep" on Friday morning at 18 years of age, Atsuko Sato wrote in a blog post. Kabosu became one of the most recognizable animals on the internet back in 2010 when a photo of her posing with folded paws and a quizzical expression spread across forums such as Reddit. That sparked a proliferation of "doge" memes, based on an intentional misspelling of the word "dog," with internet users photoshopping Kabosu's face onto pastries, landmarks and other animals. The popularity of "doge" memes was cemented in December 2013, when Kabosu became the face of alternative cryptocurrency Dogecoin — a tongue-in-cheek response to Bitcoin that reflected the internet's love of animal memes. Morgan Spurlock, the filmmaker and former CNN series host whose McDonald's documentary "Super Size Me" was nominated for an Academy Award, died of cancer complications Thursday, according to his family. Spurlock, who was 53, died in New York, surrounded by family and friends, his brother said in a statement. "It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan," Craig Spurlock said. "Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him." Spurlock's directing career was varied and unpredictable. He was best known for "Super Size Me," which sparked a national conversation — and no shortage of controversy — over America's relationship with fast food. The film involved his experiment in consuming only food from McDonald's for a 30 days and required him to "super-size" his food order if prompted by in the sales transaction. The United Nations’ top court has ordered Israel to immediately halt its controversial military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, further increasing international pressure on Israel over its war against Hamas. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, the Netherlands, said the humanitarian situation in Gaza was "disastrous." She’s been flying planes, both military and commercial, for about 43 years, breaking down barrier after barrier along the way. But on May 23, Captain Theresa Claiborne will land her “final flight” at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey after traveling from Lisbon, Portugal, with her friends and family in tow. “I’ve had a great career,” Claiborne told CNN Travel via Zoom shortly before setting off for Lisbon. “And it’s time for me to park the brakes for the final time on a big airplane.” While she’s looking forward to “closing that one chapter and starting another,” Claiborne can’t help but get a little teary when she thinks of the “wide-eyed” children who often marvel at her as she strides through an airport in her pilot uniform. “To still impart that knowledge on young people, and particularly young Black women, that they can do this.” In the US, 93.7% of professional pilots are White and 92.5% of professional pilots are male, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a groundbreaking antitrust lawsuit that threatens to upend the way concertgoers pay for tickets, the US government and dozens of states sued Live Nation on Thursday, alleging that for years the parent company of Ticketmaster abused its industry dominance to harm fans nationwide. The long-expected suit, filed in New York by the Justice Department and 30 state and district attorneys general, challenges the country’s biggest ticketing website and concert promoter, which regulators allege was the mastermind of a plan to stifle competition. The governments are seeking a jury trial and a breakup of the company. If successful, the case could lead to sweeping changes in the market for live events – an industry that came under intense scrutiny in 2022 after glitches at Ticketmaster blocked millions from purchasing tickets for Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour. “The DOJ’s lawsuit won’t solve the issues fans care about relating to ticket prices, service fees, and access to in-demand shows,” Live Nation said in a statement. “Calling Ticketmaster a monopoly may be a PR win for the DOJ in the short term, but it will lose in court because it ignores the basic economics of live entertainment.” Read more at the link in our bio.
