An armed man gave no warning as he walked toward the front of Jesus' Dwelling Place Church in Pennsylvania on Sunday, raised a gun toward the pastor's face and pulled the trigger. What happened next may have been divine intervention, Pastor Glenn Germany said. "I'm thankful to God that I'm still here, because he definitely pulled the trigger," Germany told CNN affiliate WTAE. The gunman "attempted to shoot, but the firearm failed to discharge," Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement. State police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Bernard Junior Polite. Polite faces charges of attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, court records show. After the attempted shooting at the church, police found the body of a man who was shot in Polite's home, Allegheny County police told CNN. Hamas said it has accepted a ceasefire deal proposed by Egypt and Qatar which seeks to halt the seven-month war with Israel in Gaza. In a statement Monday, Hamas said the head of its political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, told the Qatari prime minister and Egyptian intelligence minister that the militant group had accepted their proposal. Shortly afterwards, Israel said the proposal Hamas had accepted was still far from the "necessary requirements," but that it would send a delegation to the mediators. It also reiterated its commitment to launch an offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, saying its war cabinet had "unanimously decided" to continue with the operation "to exert military pressure on Hamas." Israel's military has issued a call for residents of eastern Rafah to "evacuate immediately," a day after the country's defense minister told troops inside Gaza to expect "intense action in Rafah in the near future." Bernard Hill, the British actor best known for his roles in "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, has died, his agent told PA Media. He was 79. Hill found fame in his home country starring in 1982’s "Boys from the Blackstuff," a gritty drama about unemployed men that became symbolic of the Thatcher era. But it was in smaller roles, lending quiet dignity to some of the most successful films in cinema history, that he will be most familiar to audiences. In James Cameron's 1997 multi-Oscar winning "Titanic," Hill plays the ship's Captain Edward Smith as a man haunted by his role in the tragedy and ultimately resigned to his fate. Hill later appeared in two parts of Peter Jackson's blockbuster "The Lord of the Rings" series as Théoden, King of Rohan, who in "The Two Towers" is manipulated by his adviser before becoming a heroic leader in "The Return of the King." Frank Stella, the American artist renowned for his abstract works, died on Saturday at the age of 87, his longtime representative said in a statement. Stella achieved early fame with his monochromatic “Black Paintings,” which were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art when he was just 22, and became his most famous contribution to the postwar abstract movement. Authorities say Frank Tyson, 53, crashed his vehicle into a utility pole and fled to a nearby veteran’s hall in East Canton, Ohio. While he was being placed under arrest, he told officers several times that he couldn’t breathe. He was later pronounced dead. President Joe Biden on Friday honored 19 Americans with the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom - a diverse list that includes some high-profile Biden political allies, celebrities, civil rights leaders and even one of his former political rivals-turned-financial backer. The list included two of Biden’s core allies in the House of Representatives: former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn. Also honored were Opal Lee, an educator and activist who helped make Juneteenth become a federal holiday, Katie Ledecky, the most decorated female swimmer in history, actress Michelle Yeoh, the first woman of Asian descent to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, and former Secretary of State John Kerry, who served in Biden’s administration as a climate envoy and as a Massachusetts senator during his time in public service. The list also included former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who sought the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination that Biden would eventually clinch. Naturalists have already spotted the first arrivals in a rare phenomenon during which cicadas will emerge this spring across more than a dozen US states — including populous areas like Chicago, Nashville and St. Louis — covering eastern parts of the country with billions, perhaps trillions, of the flying bugs. The insects will infiltrate a much bigger geographical area than similar occurrences because they’re part of the dual emergence of two particular periodical cicada broods.
