Michigan’s Alma Cooper was named Miss USA on Sunday, becoming the third person to hold the title this year following the stunning resignation of 2023’s winner. The 22-year-old US Army officer, who has a Master’s in data science from Stanford University, beat 50 other contestants in a pageant that included swimwear and evening gown competitions. “As the daughter of a migrant worker, a proud Afro Latina woman and an officer of the United States Army, I am living the American dream,” she had told judges during a Q&A session at Sunday’s finale. “If there’s anything that my life and my mother have taught me, it’s that your circumstances never define your destiny: You can make success accessible through demanding excellence.” Cooper was crowned on stage by previous titleholder, Savannah Gankiewicz of Hawaii, who inherited the tiara in May after Utah’s Noelia Voigt stepped down in highly controversial circumstances. Hinamoeura Cross, a 25-year-old Tahitian lawyer and mother, received a phone call in 2013 that would change her life forever. After a routine blood test, the medical laboratory called and asked if she had been stung by a bee. Confused, Cross said no. The technician explained that her test results showed an abnormally high white blood cell count, and recommended she see a doctor immediately. Soon after, Cross was diagnosed with leukemia. Cancers seemed to run in her family, especially among the women. Her mother, grandmother, aunt and sister had all been diagnosed with thyroid or breast cancer. Five years after her diagnosis, she says a report on the news piqued her interest and made her question whether there was more to her leukemia than she knew. It was that the former president of French Polynesia had filed a complaint against France for alleged crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court in relation to the fall-out of nuclear testing that had been done by the European country in its overseas territory in the South Pacific, for three decades starting in 1966. When Cross came across the story, she says it changed everything for her. "I was dumbfounded… and then I happened across the list of radiation-induced diseases. I saw thyroid cancer, breast cancer… and then I saw leukemia, and that's when everything started to fall into place," Cross told CNN. In 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron stopped short of an apology to French Polynesians for the impact of the nuclear testing, admitting that the tests were "not clean" and saying that France owes a "debt" to the island territory. Noah Lyles has done it. With a time of 9.79 seconds in the 100-meter sprint, the American raced to take the gold and the title of world’s fastest man. Lyles topped Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by five-thousandths of a second, and American Fred Kerley took home the bronze with a time of 9.81. The victory by Lyles ends an Olympic gold medal drought for the US in this race that had stretched back to the Athens Games in 2004. Italian boxer Angela Carini has apologized after quitting her bout at the Paris Olympics in 46 seconds, a viral moment that has led to online abuse of her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif. "I'm sorry for my opponent," she told Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport. "If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision." "It wasn't something I intended to do," Carini continued. "Actually, I want to apologize to her and everyone else. I was angry because my Olympics had gone up in smoke." Some spectators watching the match later raised questions about Khelif's participation, citing a 2023 decision by a now-discredited boxing regulator to bar her from a women's tournament. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) however strongly supports her participation in the 2024 Games, with IOC spokesperson Mark Adams saying she was "born female, was registered female, lived her life as a female, boxed as a female, has a female passport." Vice President Kamala Harris has won enough votes from Democratic delegates to win the party's nomination for president, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced Friday. Harris will become the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major-party ticket. The announcement came during a virtual event with supporters Friday. Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign said it raked in a whopping $310 million in its July fundraising efforts – more than double the amount raised by her Republican rival last month – and has $377 million cash on hand, marking the latest sign of how transformative and energizing the change to the top of the Democratic ticket has been among grassroots and high-dollar supporters. A majority of that $310 million haul, more than $200 million, was raised in the first week of Harris’ candidacy, the campaign said in a statement, with two-thirds of the fundraising coming from first-time donors to the campaign. The July numbers signal a remarkable turnaround and more than double former President Donald Trump’s fundraising this month: the Trump campaign announced Thursday that its political operation had raised $138.7 million in July, with $327 million cash on hand. Even so, July was a strong fundraising month for Trump that saw him accept his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention, announce his running mate, Ohio Sen.
