Jullie hebben de mensen verteld dat dit het elfde uur is, nu moeten jullie teruggaan en de mensen vertellen dat dit hét uur is. En er zijn dingen om over na te denken… Waar woon je? Wat doe je? Hoe zijn je relaties? Ben je in de juiste relatie? Waar is je water? Ken je eigen tuin. Het is tijd om je waarheid te spreken. Bouw je eigen gemeenschap. Wees goed voor elkaar. Dear young people, Do you mind if I tell you something? I ask my own children if I can tell them my thoughts before I share them now. I have learned this is much better than just blurting them out and letting them land without warning. Because here's the thing. We tend to generalise about groups of people, don't we? I always thought old people were really annoying. Now as I scrabble about in my bag for my glasses, holding up the queue, I realise I am one of them. And I think it's true of young people too. We might see a bunch of college kids screeching about pronouns and think that's all of you. But it is not. I see you trying to find a job, or searching for friends. I watch you struggling to find your place in life, and wondering where to fit in. And I see that we have made it very difficult for you now. Before, life was pretty much laid out for us. There was a path and, save for a few twists and turns, our direction was kind of set. The opportunities were sitting there waiting to be taken, like ripe avocados on a tree. Back then, we could afford a big life: choose fun – often, go out on a Friday and a Saturday and a Sunday, and make brilliant mistakes that cost us a bit but were totally worth it. Without much of a plan, somehow we still ended up with a house and a person to call our own and maybe a car or a baby or a dog before realising we had become our parents, in all the best ways. I guess freedom is like that. When no one is trying to stop you, everything is about the word "go". Get in your car and drive towards the ocean, run towards the sunshine, jump the fence at a festival with just a fiver in your jean pocket. But this country is not the country that it was. Stop signs are everywhere now. Endless punitive rules, social networks 'performing' contact but giving you none. Cameras to record your humiliation. Everything harder, more expensive, more regulated, less fun. This is a lonely time. I was gifted the 80s; VHS, Michael Jackson, Acid house and Sunny Delight. You got 'Covid' bollocks and £10 blocks of cheese. As I see it, we owe you. We want you to have the freedoms we knew. I am not against anyone. I don't have hate, even for those who will celebrate my end, that's OK. Think what you want, be what you want, believe what you want. As long as you extend the same courtesy to all others. Agreement was never my aim. But here's the thing I wanted to tell you. I will fight like a wounded thing against those trying to stop you living your biggest life. I will fight the powerful man telling you that you should not, you cannot, you must not. Or that you have to wait, or ask permission, or pay a fine or buy a pass. I will not relent. Because your freedom is your God-given thing. It is no man's to take away. Now you get out there and live a big messy life. I'll be right here in my glasses, trying to clear your path.
