Join us for the second-annual CS50x Puzzle Day at Oxford! CS50 is back in the United Kingdom! Join us at the University of Oxford on Friday, November 6, 2026, 5pm–10pm, for a CS50x Puzzle Day in collaboration with Oxford Lifelong Learning, with Professor David J. Malan from Harvard, Professor Daniel Wilson from Oxford, Professor Nicholas Day from Oxford, and Professor Tom Crawford from Oxford (and Cambridge and Tom Rocks Maths). CS50x Puzzle Day is an opportunity to collaborate on teams of 2, 3, and 4 to solve a packet of puzzles (i.e., logic problems). Among the event’s goals is to send a message that computer science is more about problem-solving than it is about, say, programming. Puzzles are not programming challenges. No prior CS or programming experience needed, just logic and smarts! No team? No problem! We will help teams form at the event. Tickets on sale until 4pm on November 4, 2026. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cs50x-puzzle-day-at-oxford-tickets-2000986451341

“What concerns me most is not only that things like the Hugging Face incident can happen without our initially knowing about or understanding them — but how quickly they can happen.”  In this interview for The Harvard Gazette, Professor David J. Malan talks about the CS50 Duck, the changing landscape of AI, and the future of computer science education.  https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2026/09/taming-the-duck-for-starters/

“It’s been fairly well-documented that even when you are not proactively revealing much about yourself, your devices are, your browsers are, your behaviors are, so typically by nature of what you’re clicking on, what sites you’re visiting, how long you’re spending on them, social media companies can create a profile about you… because they’re detecting patterns in those behaviours of yours.”  Professor David J. Malan goes on ABC’s Radio National Breakfast to talk about the nature of social media algorithms and what their regulation could look like.  https://www.abc.net.au/listen/programs/radionational-breakfast/how-could-opt-in-algorithms-work-for-australians/107125504
