The founder of Ansar Allah, Sayyid Hussein Badr al-Din al-Houthi, was martyred in 2004. At that time, the Ansar Allah movement was a very small group confined to one of the mountains of Saada Governorate. The former regime thought that by assassinating the founder of the Ansar Allah group, it would kill the project adopted by the martyred founder, which is resistance to America and Israel. But this did not happen. Rather, what happened was that the group grew stronger and expanded until it took control of Yemen in 2014 through a popular revolution. Bureaucratic institutional structures burden the movement with responsibilities and make it vulnerable to exploitation.” Thus, the movement, which began in the early 1980s, played a role beyond its organizational size; “Jihad,” as many say, “is an idea greater than the organization.” It is a “missionary entity followed by the masses, with even opponents and adversaries later supporting the ideas they once opposed, with their own blood.” Finally, the defiant man met his fate, which had guarded him for 44 years, a life where he greeted every threat of death with his favorite phrase: “The guardian of life is its appointed end.” Al-Shaqaqi was martyred, and as Mohamed Moro said, “Who will be martyred if not Fathi Al-Shaqaqi?” He left his indelible mark on every upheaval that rocked Palestine, wishing to keep its wounds open: “My people, bring salt... so this wound remains alive.” Throughout his life, he reproached himself: “I will not forgive you; my mother curses me if I forgave... You will not believe until you see the blood on my chest", published in Al-Akhbar by Yousef Fares on October 13, 2022 (1/2): — Ibrahim Al-Shaweesh was the name on Fathi Al-Shaqaqi’s forged passport when a "Mossad" unit assassinated him on October 26, 1995, in the town of Sliema on the island of Malta. Fathi Ibrahim Al-Shaqaqi (1951) was born in Rafah refugee camp, and was a diligent student at Birzeit University, from which he graduated with a degree in mathematics. He then went to Zagazig University in Egypt before returning to work as a doctor at Al-Mutala’ Hospital in Al-Quds, and later in Gaza. In Zagazig, alongside his fellow students, Al-Shaqaqi found answers to questions that had troubled him for years. A native of the occupied village of Zarnouqa and a believer in Nasserist nationalism with profound feelings and insights, he searched extensively for the reasons behind the defeat and the role of Islam as a belief in the Palestinian cause. Amid these questions, the Islamic Revolution erupted in Iran, which Al-Shaqaqi—the founder of Islamic Jihad—saw as a turning point that would disrupt the stagnant Arab, Islamic, and international landscape after the decline of nationalist and socialist movements. At that time, the martyr wrote his book, "Khomeini... The Islamic Solution and Alternative" where he laid out his forward-looking ideas for the future of the region and the world, just months before the revolution’s victory. Later, his writings, under the pseudonym "Fathi Abdel Aziz," stirred great debate, especially since he dedicated the book to "the two men of the Quran... Imam Hassan Al-Banna and the revolutionary Ayatollah Khomeini." Many questions arose about the identity of the movement he would establish in the early 1980s: did Al-Shaqaqi break away from the Muslim Brotherhood, to which he belonged, or did he introduce a new ideology from within it? Nevertheless, "Ezz Al-Din Al-Fares" did not focus on these debates but rather expressed his firm belief that "the black turbans have a role in the last quarter of the 20th century... and the black headscarves of women, too." Al-Shaqaqi also saw a connection between "the martyrdom of Hussein over 1,300 years ago and the fall of some of the most modern regimes in West Asia." He answered the flood of defeatist questions by drawing from the words of his previous inspiration, Gamal Abdel Nasser: "With whom shall I save this revolution? If only I were one of the men of religion." He analyzed past revolutionary experiences, like that of Algeria, referencing the words of Houari Boumediene, who rebelled against Ahmed Ben Bella: "I saw hundreds of thousands of Algerians walking in Sheikh Al-Bashir Al-Ibrahimi’s funeral, as if rejecting the new ways Ben Bella brought them. The people longed for the conservative past, seeing the effects of the revolutionary present." Al-Shaqaqi thus presented “revolutionary Islam” as an alternative, criticizing rigid interpretations of scripture that confined religion to legalistic punishments, like "cutting off the hand of the thief and flogging the adulterer," while lands as far as the eye could see were drowning in debt created by colonialism, which had seized their political decisions and stunted their development and progress. Al-Shaqaqi and his companions rediscovered Sheikh Ezz Al-Din Al-Qassam, the Azhari scholar who left his town of Jableh in the Latakia district of Syria (1920), under French occupation, to Haifa in Palestine. There, the martyred Sheikh rallied people to resist British occupation before ascending in the Battle of Ya'bad in the forests of Jenin (1935). Al-Shaqaqi and his comrades carried Al-Qassam’s story as a profound symbol, opposing the "Gulf Islamists" who answered the call to fight in Kabul when the U.S. signaled for "jihad" against the Soviets, as the late journalist Mohamed Hassanein Heikal described.

Rez Karim: Recognizing the contentious nature of the subject, this two-part article relies only on official treatises, pacts and primary sourced evidence to compile a historically accurate account of the founding of Saudi Arabia and Al Saud family becoming ‘Royals’. Growing up Muslim in a Muslim majority country, I spent most Friday afternoons at a mosque, attending the Jummah prayer. First part of a Jummah prayer calls for the Imam to perform a Khutbah – a weekly sermon of sorts. It was in one of those Khutbahs that I, as a very young boy, learnt about the plight of the Palestinians for the first time. Indeed, it’s a common practice among Imams around the world to bring up the Palestinian issue at mosques, especially during Friday sermons, and pray for the Palestinian people. In those prayers and discussions, Israel’s name comes up inevitably. In fact, Israel’s oppression of Palestinians bears no ambiguity in Islamic thoughts. And condemnation of Israel, therefore, comes naturally to Muslims around the world. However, what escapes awareness in almost all Muslims is the connection between Israel and Saudi Arabia. While zealously castigating Israel for its atrocities, Muslims often revere Saudi Arabia as the custodians of Islam’s holiest sites; completely ignoring the Kingdom’s role in founding the Zionist state in the first place. Notwithstanding the existence of a deep-seated bias against Israel among Muslims, it’s important to recognize that the lack of criticism for Saudi Kingdom, alongside Israel, doesn’t come from bias. Indeed, this absence finds its roots not in bias, but in a complete lack of knowledge. Knowledge among current generation of Muslims, as well as among the world population, about how Saudi Arabia and its founding king, Abdel Aziz Ibn Saud, played a critical role in establishing the Zionist state of Israel. Suffice it to say, this ignorance about one of the most critical periods in world history seems anything but normal. Amazingly, the world, especially the Muslim world, had been kept in darkness about this momentous chapter in Middle East history. Propaganda and omissions run rampant within the historical accounts of this period. Official Saudi sources like House of Saud website, for example, avoids any mention of British involvement in founding the KSA. Although this omission seems predictable to many, it’s worth noting that even mainstream media outlets like the BBC, and prominent historians such as Professor Eugene Rogan etc., routinely portray Ibn Saud as having acted independently during WWI, and not as an instrument for the British Empire.
