🇲🇾 Malaysia detains more Israel-bound cargo
Malaysian authorities have detained three additional containers at Tanjung Pelepas port in August, with the shipments bound for Ashdod Port in Israel. According to people familiar with the matter, the containers were held on Aug. 19 and remain unreleased while authorities investigate their contents; manifests identified the cargo as electric bicycle parts from Chinese manufacturer Chongqing Mobimax Technology.
The detentions followed an earlier Aug. 7 seizure of another container that originated in the Philippines and was suspected by Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency of carrying weapons because it was headed to Elbit Systems, an Israeli defence firm. Malaysia bans trade with Israel under its customs laws but permits transit goods, making the repeated seizures a sign of tighter scrutiny at a major regional transshipment hub.
Shipping data cited in the report showed the Aug. 7 container carried by Hapag-Lloyd and the three later containers carried by Maersk were still at the port weeks later. The case points to potential disruption risks for Israel-linked cargo moving through Malaysian ports.
