The British Indian Army would profoundly shape the contours of caste in India by creating caste-first regiments & "Martial Races." For example, one of the most surprising transformations was selecting Sikhs who didn't cut their hair for their regiment, thereby strengthening religious orthodoxy in Sikhism. "Martial Races" were prized not only for their combative nature & loyalty but also for their "thick-headedness" and percieved lack of intelligence, which the British saw as a threat manifesting in other Indian groups. However, the primary qualification for being a martial race soon became loyalty to the British in the 1857 rebellion. Castes & groups who formerly made up the largest chunk of the British Indian Army (like Purabiyas or a general swathe of soldiers from East UP to Bengal) were cast aside for loyalist groups like Sikhs, Punjabi Muslims, & Pashtuns.
