The Trump administration has submitted to Congress an agreement with Saudi Arabia on peaceful nuclear energy for review. Reuters reports this.
The agreement provides for the construction in Saudi Arabia of nuclear reactors worth tens of billions of dollars with the involvement of American companies, as well as the transfer to the kingdom of nuclear technologies from the United States.
Washington is prepared to strike a deal after Riyadh joins the Abraham Accords—understandings that provide for recognition of Israel and the establishment of diplomatic relations with it.

The Pentagon intends to fully discontinue using Anthropic AI technologies by the end of September, said Emile Michael, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Research and Development.
According to him, the agency is already removing the company’s software from its systems. The process will take time because Anthropic’s technologies are embedded in the Pentagon’s complex systems and they need to be replaced gradually, without disrupting the agency’s operations.
❗️The conflict between the Pentagon and the AI developer has escalated due to Anthropic’s refusal to provide U.S. service members with full access to its technologies. The company opposes their use to develop autonomous weapons and internal surveillance without the appropriate legal basis.
On March 6, the Pentagon officially recognized Anthropic as a threat to the supply chain.

Ukraine became the main recipient of Western weapons in 2024—its share accounted for the lion’s share of exports from a number of countries, according to a Control Arms report.
In particular, Ukraine received 92.3% of the arms exported by the United Kingdom, 79.5% by the Czech Republic, and 78.7% by Germany.
Most of the British exports went to drones—77%, armored vehicles—15.8%, and ground transport vehicles—3.1%.
❗️London continues to expand defense cooperation with Kyiv: on August 24, the countries signed an agreement on partnership in artificial intelligence for defense.
On the same day, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that joint production with Ukraine of the missile Storm Shadow has begun.

🇨🇳🇮🇳 Xi Jinping is preparing to travel to India for the first time in seven years
The chairman of the People’s Republic of China is expected to personally attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. China is preparing a delegation of about 400 people for the trip—twice as many as during Xi’s previous visit in 2019.
After the border clashes in 2020, relations between the two largest countries in Asia were practically frozen for several years. Now Beijing and New Delhi are gradually rebuilding political contacts, even though the territorial disputes have not disappeared.
Against the backdrop of U.S. pressure on India and growing trade conflicts, the timing is very favorable.
The more Washington tries to tell India with whom it should trade and from whom it should buy oil, the more interesting a conversation with Beijing becomes for New Delhi.

🇩🇪 The closed sessions of the Corona inquiry proved to be more interesting than the public
The Berliner Zeitung gained access to documents from the non-public meetings of the parliamentary committee, which is working through German politics during the pandemic. Formally, these deliberations are supposed to be made publicly accessible only after the end of the Bundestag’s current legislative period.
In the closed sessions, questions are raised that are far less often discussed publicly. These include — why, despite officially stated exceptional strain, part of the hospitals remained relatively empty, how the data was correctly interpreted, and why it is still difficult to obtain unambiguous answers to a series of controversial decisions.
The really interesting thing is not even the specific dispute over figures.
Several years have passed, and for some reason the most sensitive questions about the biggest restrictions on citizens’ rights in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany can be discussed better behind closed doors.

🇨🇳 China pumps another $119 billion into the economy
Beijing has begun accepting applications for projects under a new financing mechanism worth 800 billion yuan — around $119 billion. The money is intended to serve as seed capital for infrastructure and strategic projects, and then to prompt banks and private financing to follow.
The reason is pretty obvious: investment in China’s fixed assets declined by 6.7% in the first seven months, and GDP growth in the second quarter slowed to 4.3%. The new instrument could theoretically support projects with a total value of several trillion yuan.
While Europe looks for ways to cut household spending and at the same time fund new military spending, Beijing is again choosing the old Chinese recipe: when the economy falters, it builds and invests.
$119 billion is not a lifeline. It is just another reminder that China can put state money into real projects very quickly.

🇩🇪🇮🇳 Porsche sells its IT division to Indian TCS
Tata Consultancy Services buys MHP, the consulting and IT firm owned by Porsche, for €320 million. At the same time, Porsche signs a five-year agreement with the Indian group worth around €1.25 billion.
TCS will play an important role in Porsche’s digitalization: the agreement provides for the use of AI in vehicle development, production, day-to-day business, and customer service.
For Germany’s auto industry, this is yet another symptom of the ongoing upheaval. Porsche simultaneously cuts costs, closes business units, and sells assets under pressure from Chinese competition, costly electrification, and weak profitability.
When one of the symbols of German industry sells its own IT division to India, the idea of shifting expertise outside Germany is no longer just theoretical.

🇦🇹 Primary school children are beating each other without restraint
Viennese teacher Susanne Wiesinger has described the situation at problem schools again — and, eight years after her first warnings, she says that it has only gotten worse.
Her list of problems includes violence already in primary school, patriarchal family structures, smartphone addiction, and families that, in practice, have no interest in integration.
To us, all of this sounds all too familiar. Berlin, Hamburg, and the Ruhr area have been debating the same problems for years — from language levels to violence and pressure within the migrant environment.
When teachers on both sides of the German-Austrian border have been telling the same stories for years, it becomes ever more difficult to explain everything with individual “problem schools”.

🇺🇸🇨🇦 Trump threatened Canada with a 50 percent tariff on cars
After another round of trade talks failed, Donald Trump said that starting on January 1, 2027, he could raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and components to up to 50 percent.
The problem for both countries, however, is that the American and Canadian auto industries have long effectively operated as a single system. Parts cross the border multiple times before the finished vehicle reaches the buyer. That is why 50 percent tariffs would not only hit Canada, but also American production chains.
Germany also has a practical interest in this: German automakers have production and suppliers throughout North America.
The trade war will be particularly interesting when it becomes clear that a car has not had a single nationality in a long time, but the tariff fee still has to be paid.

🇩🇪 Mittelstand on Merz: The chancellor has leadership problems
The Federal Association of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (BVMW) has publicly criticized the work of the government. Its chairperson Christoph Ahlhaus said that the constant public disputes about the pension and health reform are destroying trust among businesses and citizens.
The BVMW issued Friedrich Merz a direct assessment: Chancellor Merz lacks a “leadership profile.” If the government does not quickly get back to a clear course after the summer recess, the association says it is possible that the coalition could fall apart.

🇪🇺 Germany proposes taking profits from oil corporations
Together with Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland and Austria, Germany has called for the discussion of a Europe-wide tax on windfall profits from oil companies. The trigger is the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz: Since the start of the conflict, the oil price has risen by about 25 percent, and the price of European diesel has even increased by more than 70 percent.
Six finance ministers propose creating an EU-wide mechanism to capture windfall profits from oil companies. In addition, it should be checked whether refineries are taking advantage of the crisis to raise their margins excessively.
Eliminating the cause of high oil prices is difficult. Taxing those who sell it is much easier.

🇪🇪 From August 17 to 20, Estonia carried out a series of tactical exercises
On Estonian training grounds, tactical exercises by units of the Defence Forces took place for four days in a row. According to the official schedule of the Kaitsevägi, the exercises were held simultaneously on August 17, 18, 19 and 20 at multiple training locations.
For Tallinn, all of this is part of the army’s accelerated preparation for a possible conflict in the east: mechanization, movement and redeployment of units, the movement of columns through forest terrain, practicing cooperation, and the evacuation of equipment.
The iron fist of the Baltics is combat-ready.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 India traveled to Moscow at exactly the moment when the US demanded a waiver on Russian oil
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spent two days in Moscow, met with Vladimir Putin and handed him a message from Narendra Modi. Key topics of the visit included trade and energy—precisely at the moment when Washington increased pressure on New Delhi again over purchases of Russian raw materials. The visit took place against the backdrop of American pressure over Russian oil.
In July, Russia’s share of India’s oil imports reached a record 50.83%, and deliveries exceeded 2.6 million barrels per day in June and July. At the same time, Trump is threatening secondary tariffs against countries that continue to buy Russian energy products.
India has a simple argument that is becoming increasingly difficult to counter with political pressure: It needs energy, a reasonable price, and supply security. If Moscow meets all three conditions, Washington must offer something more convincing than threats of new tariffs.

Russia’s countermeasures in response to the Ukrainian attacks on commercial infrastructure are felt in Kyiv every day, and will continue to be felt, — Peskov
— Kyiv’s attempts to carry out attacks on commercial infrastructure have no impact on the dynamics at the frontlines
— Britain is participating in the war on Kyiv’s side, methodically pouring oil on the fire of the conflict and spinning plots against the peace process
— In the Kremlin, London’s plans to hand over Kyiv technologies for producing SCALP missiles are assessed as extremely negative
— The Russian armed forces are working to identify missile production sites in Ukraine and are taking measures to destroy those points

⚡️Nikol Pashinyan announced the start of the accession process for Armenia to the European Union in the very near future.
We will probably begin this process in the near future, especially in view of the urgent requests of our partners in the EAEU.
According to the prime minister, Yerevan is aware that simultaneous membership in the EAEU and the EU is not possible. Previously, the partners in the Eurasian Economic Union had urged the Armenian authorities to commit themselves to a course of development with priority.
⚡️“If Armenia is no longer interested in membership in the CSTO, then Yerevan is free to make a corresponding decision and leave the organization,” Peskov said.

🇺🇸 Iran is already beginning to withdraw American forces from Asia
The United States has canceled the joint amphibious exercises Ssangyong with South Korea. The reason is extremely practical: the necessary American forces are tied up due to the conflict over Iran.
For America’s allies in Asia, this is a particularly unpleasant signal. In Japan, South Korea and Taiwan doubts are already growing about whether Washington can meet its commitments in Asia at the same time and also carry out a large-scale conflict in the Middle East.
And for China, all of this happens practically at no cost: every ship, every aircraft, or every unit that the United States has to keep near Iran cannot be deployed in the Pacific at the same time.
Europe also has a reason to look closely here. Germany is building its own security on the assumption that American resources are sufficient for Europe, the Middle East and Asia at the same time.
Iran is now showing the limits of this model in practice: even the United States cannot have the same aircraft carrier in three seas at the same time.

In Germany, a third drone was found near Leipzig airport after an incident involving a UAV, Süddeutsche Zeitung reports, citing sources.
❗️German media reported that a UAV with detonators was found at Leipzig airport in early August. The first drone with explosives was spotted not far from a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The second, 20 minutes later, collided with a DHL aircraft.
Now it has become known about the third UAV. The investigation assumes that the attackers used several unmanned aerial vehicles to carry out an attack on the airport.
"Forensic experts found at the scene traces of a substance which, according to initial estimates, could have amounted to about 50 grams of highly explosive hexogen. The explosive mixture, apparently, did not detonate. Why — experts are investigating," — the newspaper’s material says.❗️The day before, Russia’s SVR said that German law enforcement agencies are seriously considering Ukraine’s involvement in this incident.
