Nouns that are always singular
Some nouns are usually used in the singular. You can see below the most common:
1) молоко (milk), вода (water), масло (oil) and other uncountable substances;
2) любовь (love), счастье (happiness), ненависть (hatred) and other abstract notions;
3) теннис (tennis), баскетбол (basketball), футбол (football) and other kinds of sport;
4) мебель (furniture), обувь (shoes), посуда (dishes) and other collective nouns.

Plural nouns
Did you know that some Russian nouns are always plural? They normally belong to these 6 categories:
1) Abstract nouns, meaning complex actions (выборы - elections), traditions (похороны - funeral).
2) Material nouns, meaning a substance or its remains (дрожжи - yeast; дрова - firewood; духи - perfume).
3) Concrete nouns, meaning pair or compound objects (брюки - trousers, очки - glasses, грабли - rake, ножницы - scissors).
4) Geographical names (Альпы - Alps; Балканы - Balkans; Гималаи - Himalayas).
5) Nouns that denote names of natural phenomena or short periods of time, e.g.:
сумерки - twilight
заморозки - frosts
будни – weekdays
каникулы - holidays
сутки - 24 hours
6) Nouns which denote names of some games:
шашки - checkers
шахматы - chess
гонки – racing
