In Thailand, military service is assigned by lottery
Here’s how it works:
1️⃣Every spring (in April), young men who have turned 21 undergo a mandatory medical examination.
2️⃣Next, everyone deemed medically fit is offered the opportunity to enlist voluntarily. Incidentally, many agree. At some draft offices, the entire quota is filled by volunteers alone.
3️⃣But if the quota isn’t filled, the remaining draftees draw lots. If you draw a red ticket, you serve. If you draw a black one, you’re exempt from the draft for life.
That's what it was meant to do.
