IIT Madras Engineering Design (MS) interview 1. Introduce yourself with your background, interests, GATE credentials, interests etc. 2. Gave 2 cases of beams. 1st was cantilever with fixed end and 2nd was beam fixed at one end and other end is tied to wall and point load at tied end. Asked to draw the FBD of both the cases side by side. 3. What will be the stresses induced in both the cases? 4. How will you calculate those stresses? 5. What do you understand by thermal conductivity? Explain in basic raw form. 6. Is there any difference between thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity? 7. Electrical conductivity can be easily checked by using small components like diodes or resistors. Why is it the case that we cannot limit the thermal conductivity even with good insulation? 8. A steel rod and a copper rod are connected in series. One end of the steel rod is connected to the water bath at 100 ⁰C and the free end of the Cu bar is maintained at 0⁰C. How will you find the interface temperature. (Assume necessary variables). 9. If no such numerical values are known, what do you think the temperature profile will be just by intuition?
