Repost from N/a
• Type: Non-Fiction (Documentary)
• Why it's accurate: Instead of fictionalizing a narrative, this Netflix documentary features celebrities and scientists recounting their actual, historical drug experiences. It uses quirky, intentional animations to visually map out exactly what the speakers saw, offering an incredibly grounded and honest look at both the beautiful and terrifying realities of tripping without the constraints of a Hollywood plot.
Summary Comparison: Realism vs. Hollywood
Hallucination Type Realistic Film Depiction Core Visual/Auditory Technique Used
Psilocybin Midsommar (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fg%2F11fk4qzcd_&q=Midsommar) Breathing environments, drifting textures, pulsing vegetation.
LSD Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fm%2F0f8j13&q=Fear+and+Loathing+in+Las+Vegas) Swirling geometric patterns, melting surfaces, trails.
DMT Enter the Void (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fm%2F0dx6m2&q=Enter+the+Void) Rapid-onset, hyper-complex geometric fractals.
Sleep Deprivation The Machinist (https://www.google.com/search?q=The+Machinist) Peripheral shadow movement, blurred reality, waking dreams.
Near-Death (Resuscitation) Flatliners Tunnel vision, central white light, echoing, distant audio.
Would you like to explore how sound design plays a role in creating realistic trips, or look into the neurological science of why our brains see these specific patterns?
| 2 | Query:
most realistic film depictions of induced hallucinations: lsd, dmt, psilocybin, near-death/resuscitation, sleep-deprivation, etc. fiction vs non-fiction.
Google:
When evaluating the most realistic film depictions of hallucinations, cinematic history is split between highly stylized "Hollywood trips" and rare, deeply accurate representations.
The most realistic depictions succeed by focusing on subtle sensory distortions—breathing walls, drifting textures, enhanced color saturation, and altered audio—rather than impossible monsters or entirely fabricated realities.
💊 Psychedelics (LSD, Psilocybin, DMT)
1. Midsommar (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fg%2F11fk4qzcd_&q=Midsommar) (2019) – Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms)
• Type: Fiction
• Why it's accurate: Director Ari Aster delivered what is widely considered the most accurate depiction of a psilocybin trip in film history. Instead of relying on surreal CGI creatures, the movie uses subtle, organic practical and digital effects.
• The Realism: Earthy surfaces, grass, and flower crowns gently breathe, ripple, and pulse in the background. Colors subtly shift in saturation based on the character's emotional state, perfectly mimicking the "breathing walls" and pattern-flow distortions common to moderate psychedelic doses.
2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fm%2F0f8j13&q=Fear+and+Loathing+in+Las+Vegas) (1998) – LSD
• Type: Fiction (Adapted from semi-autobiographical gonzo journalism)
• Why it's accurate: While the movie dial up the absurdity for comedic effect, the carpet pattern scene in the hotel lobby is a textbook representation of high-dose acid "patterning." The geometric shapes on the floor begin to swirl, melt, and climb up the walls, accurately capturing how the brain's visual processing centers overlay repeating matrix patterns onto real environments.
3. Enter the Void (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fm%2F0dx6m2&q=Enter+the+Void) (2009) – DMT (Dimethyltryptamine)
• Type: Fiction
• Why it's accurate: Director Gaspar Noé spent years researching DMT to replicate its intense, fast-acting effects. The opening sequence captures the sudden, overwhelming rush of intricate, hyper-colorful geometric fractals and neon mandalas that completely overtake the visual field, shifting the user into a completely detached "hyperspace."
⏳ Sleep Deprivation & Psychosis
4. The Machinist (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fm%2F041t2d&q=The+Machinist) (2004)
• Type: Fiction
• Why it's accurate: Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) hasn't slept in a year. The film brilliantly captures the realistic progression of sleep-deprivation hallucinations. It begins with peripheral tracking errors—shadows flickering out of the corner of the eye, objects appearing to move slightly—and slowly bleeds into vivid, waking-dream auditory and visual hallucinations where the boundary between sleep and consciousness completely dissolves.
🏥 Near-Death Experiences & Resuscitation
5. Flatliners (https://www.google.com/search?kgmid=%2Fm%2F031srw&q=Flatliners) (1990)
• Type: Fiction
• Why it's accurate (conceptually): Medical students intentionally stop their hearts to glimpse the afterlife. While the manifested "sins" are Hollywood melodrama, the initial transition phase—characterized by a sudden, intense narrowing of the visual field (tunnel vision), a blinding central white light, and deeply muffled, echoing auditory distortions of the doctors trying to resuscitate them—closely matches real-world clinical accounts of oxygen-starved brains (anoxia) during cardiac arrest.

| 17 | To use a physical metaphor: Hindu diversity built a multi-story temple where every room housed a different philosophical concept, allowing the structure to grow larger over time. The Hundred Schools of Thought built a royal battleground where every school fought for the single crown of state power—leaving only one or two standing when the smoke cleared.
Would you like to dive deeper into a specific match-up, such as Hindu Vedanta vs. Chinese Daoism, or explore how Legalism shaped modern Chinese governance? | 42 |
| 18 | Google:
The structural diversity of Hinduism and ancient China’s Hundred Schools of Thought represent humanity's two greatest explosions of decentralized philosophy.
While they seem similar on the surface, they served completely different historical goals: Hindu diversity evolved to map the internal cosmos and human consciousness, whereas the Hundred Schools of Thought exploded to solve a bloody geopolitical crisis on Earth.
🏛️ The Direct Comparison
Feature Hindu Philosophical Diversity Chinese Hundred Schools of Thought
Primary Catalyst Internal spiritual exploration and mapping the layers of consciousness. The Warring States Period (c. 475–221 BCE); a desperate need to fix a broken, violent society.
Core Question "Who am I, what is ultimate reality, and how do I escape suffering?" "How do we restore peace, govern the state, and make society orderly?"
Ultimate Fate Assimilation: Contradictory ideas were synthesized into a massive, enduring, pluralistic religion. Extermination & Monopoly: The Qin Dynasty brutally ended the debate, forcing a state monopoly.
Core Thinkers Vyasa, Shankara, Ramanuja, Patanjali, Kapila. Confucius, Laozi, Han Feizi, Mozi, Sun Tzu.
🕉️ 1. Hindu Diversity: The Infinite Spectrum
Hinduism did not develop as a single religion with a neat set of rules. Instead, it grew as an interconnected ecosystem of philosophies that openly debated each other for thousands of years.
• The Astika vs. Nastika Split: Thinkers were grouped by whether they accepted the authority of the ancient Vedas (Astika) or rejected them (Nastika).
• The Six Orthodox Schools (Shad-Darshanas): Even within the accepted Vedic framework, the schools disagreed completely on how the universe works. For example, Nyaya focused on cold, computational logic. Samkhya was a deeply analytical, dualistic philosophy that didn't require a creator God. Vedanta argued that everything in existence is made of one, unified divine consciousness (Brahman).
• The Radical Heterodox: Simultaneously, schools like Carvaka rejected spirituality entirely, advocating for a hardline, materialistic, "eat-drink-and-be-merry" philosophy.
• The Genius of Synthesis: Instead of killing off rival ideas, Hinduism created a tiered system. It declared that different philosophies are simply different viewpoints of the exact same mountain, allowing a monist, a dualist, an atheist, and a polytheist to all sit at the same table and call themselves Hindu.
🇨🇳 2. The 100 Schools: The Practical Survival Matrix
The "Hundred Schools of Thought" (诸子百家) exploded during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, an era when China was fractured into warring kingdoms tearing each other apart. Intellectuals wandered from kingdom to kingdom acting as political consultants, trying to sell warlords on their specific survival strategies.
• The Main Competitors:
• Confucianism: Argued that society could be saved by restoring strict family hierarchies, good manners, and moral duty.
• Daoism: Argued that government was the problem, and that humans should abandon society to live in harmony with the natural flow of the universe (The Dao).
• Legalism: Rejected morality entirely. They argued that humans are inherently selfish and stupid, and can only be controlled through terrifyingly harsh punishments and absolute state control.
• Mohism: Preached universal love, anti-war pacifism, and strict meritocracy.
• The Brutal End: Unlike the Hindu system of flexible assimilation, the Chinese debate had a sudden, violent finish. In 221 BCE, the state of Qin conquered all rivals using brutal Legalist tactics. The new Emperor ordered the Burning of Books and Burying of Scholars, systematically executing rival philosophers and vaporizing their texts to ensure absolute political compliance.
