Last week, the NUS Physics Society (Physoc) held its annual Physics Mookata Bonding Dinner, bringing students and professors together for an evening of good food, great company and lively chat around the grill 🍄‍🟫🫑🍗🔥!  It was a welcome break from the usual rhythm of lectures and coursework, and every student had a chance to relax as well as connect with fellow physics majors and professors beyond the classroom. Physoc hopes the event left everyone with happy memories of the time spent together this semester! (Contributed by the NUS Physics Society)

NASA’s next-generation Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, launched into space on August 30, is designed to deliver cutting-edge astronomical data starting early next year. With a field of view 100 times larger than Hubble’s, it will survey huge regions of space and investigate dark matter and dark energy that dominate our universe. Roman will also seek out tens of thousands of exoplanets, study interactions between galaxies, detect exploding stars, and uncover many more unexpected discoveries that could shape astronomy for decades to come. (From left) Dr Km Rubi and Dr King Yau Yip at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Tallahassee Florida   A research team led by Prof Ariando from NUS Physics, working with scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory, has uncovered that a class of nickel-based materials, known as Samarium-based infinite-layer nickelates, can regain their superconducting ability under strong magnetic fields. “We see a path to pushing this concept toward even higher temperatures, including by exploring how it may be implemented in high-temperature cuprates. This is a bold and exciting next step, and one that could bring us closer to superconductors that operate under truly practical conditions,” remarked Prof Ariando. Read here for more.

21 July was Commencement Day for NUS Physics. Physics graduates, adorned in their academic regalia, eagerly awaited the moment they would receive their scrolls on stage at the University Cultural Centre. The occasion marked the culmination of their years of unwavering perseverance, dedication and learning. An afternoon Graduation Tea on the same day, hosted by the NUS Physics Society, brought together graduates, their families and academic staff. Poly2Graph converts complex-energy spectra into mathematical graphs that AI can efficiently read, enabling HSG-12M, a large benchmark for graph-based AI. (Image generated using AI tool based on the author’s publication) A multidisciplinary research team has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) benchmark and open-source software that transform the complex energy bands of crystals into mathematical graphs (networks) that AI can efficiently learn from, opening new possibilities for the data-driven design of materials and metamaterials. The team was led by Associate Professor Lee Ching Hua, in collaboration with Associate Professor Duane Loh, both from NUS Physics, and Assistant Professor Kenji Kawaguchi from NUS Computer Science. For student Lin Yihan, the MSc AI for Science programme offered by NUS Physics, especially the AI for Astrophysics course, piques his interest right from the start. It offers the unique convergence where subject matters of his heart—mathematics, machine learning and astrophysics—could be meaningfully brought together within a single academic framework. “AI for science requires us to first understand the underlying scientific problem itself and then determine the role AI can play within it,” Yihan explained. Students were experimenting with controlling claw grip strength via the application of pressure, a lesson on the power of hydraulics. Professor Hao Yan, currently the Regents Professor and Milton D Glick Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Arizona State University, and Director of the Center for Molecular Design and Biomimetics in the Biodesign Institute, visited NUS Physics from 2 to 4 June as part of the Distinguished Visitor Lecture Series. A pioneer of structural DNA nanotechnology, Prof Yan has helped establish it as a chemical and engineering discipline and has been instrumental in shaping the global biomolecular nanoscience community. In a recent interview with Fortune, visiting professor at NUS Physics and climate scientist Prof Ming Yi, together with other regional scientists, expressed concerns about the impact that recent extreme weather conditions will bring to Asia. A potential “Super El Nino”, an exceptionally strong version of El Nino, threatens to disrupt hydropower generation and reduce agricultural output.
