| 5 | A Note to Those Appearing for UPPCS 2025 Interview
Having gone through the UPPCS interview myself and being fortunate enough to be selected in the 2024 examination, I wanted to share one thing with those appearing for the 2025 interview—please don't let the market noise around “interview preparation” overpower your own personality.
There is an entire ecosystem around interviews today—coaching, predicted questions, model answers, personality-development sessions, hundreds of PDFs and endless discussions about what a board “likes”. Some of these resources can certainly help, but beyond a point, they can make you sound like everyone else.
My own interview was far from a perfectly rehearsed performance. It was essentially a conversation. Questions moved from my education and work to cricket, fitness, Article 311, urban problems, pollution, AI, civil-service ethics, administrative dilemmas and even the Thirsty Crow story.
What helped me was not having a prepared answer to every possible question. It was being comfortable with knowing my own background, having an opinion, and being able to explain why I held it.
A few things I genuinely learnt:
1. Know your Background Things, but don't memorise it.Anything you mention can become a conversation. Be prepared to talk about it naturally, including its ordinary and uncomfortable aspects.
2. Don't manufacture opinions.
During my interview, I was explicitly told to give my honest opinion and not be diplomatic merely for the sake of sounding “correct”. If you have a nuanced view, say so. If you don't know something, accept it gracefully.
3. Practicality matters.
Several questions were hypothetical administrative situations. The board wasn't necessarily looking for a textbook answer. They were interested in how I would approach a problem—legally, ethically and practically, while working within the system.
4. Don't underestimate your own background.
My cricket-related answers became a substantial part of the interview. Something that may appear “ordinary” on paper can become an opportunity to demonstrate depth, observation and personality.
5. Keep your preparation broad, but don't turn yourself into a walking newspaper.
Know your state, district, major issues, governance, economy, environment, Constitution and important current developments. But focus on understanding rather than collecting hundreds of facts.
6. Don't try to guess the board.
You cannot know what they will ask or what they have in mind. Prepare yourself, not a hypothetical board.
And perhaps the most important thing—
The interview is not a 30-minute test of how many answers you can remember. It is an opportunity for the board to understand the person behind the marks, DAF and examination number.
Be respectful, but don't be frightened.
Be confident, but don't pretend to know everything.
Have opinions, but remain open to correction.
Think administratively, but don't forget the human side of administration.
My interview ended with the Chairman saying, “Aise hi muskurate hue kaam kariye…”
I think that is a better takeaway than any “100 most expected questions” list.
Go there as yourself. Prepare seriously, but don't lose yourself in preparation.
