Time has changed—and so have the parameters of a good career.
A few years ago, post, power and status were often considered the primary measures of success. Today, the definition is broader.
How happy are you?
How much personal time do you have?
How comfortable are you with pressure?
And what kind of life do you actually want to live?
Every Post Comes With a Price
From the outside, a post like SDM can look extremely attractive. Authority, visibility, field exposure and an important role in administration naturally make it aspirational.
But every privilege comes with responsibility.
Law & order situations, elections, festivals, disasters, public grievances, political-administrative coordination and urgent field requirements can demand your presence beyond conventional working hours.
The same principle applies across UPPCS services.
DSP → field-intensive role, law & order responsibility, unpredictable hours and high public interaction.
SDM/Deputy Collector → substantial administrative authority, field responsibility, public dealing and crisis management.
BDO → rural development administration, extensive field visits, implementation responsibility and public interaction.
State Tax Officer / Commercial Tax roles → regulatory and enforcement responsibilities, inspections, assessments, departmental targets and comparatively more structured work patterns depending on the assignment.
Treasury, Secretariat and other comparatively desk-oriented assignments → greater predictability and potentially more structured routines, though responsibilities and workload can still vary significantly by posting.
So, What Should You Actually Look For?
Instead of asking only:
“Which is the most powerful post?”
Ask yourself:
1. Power & Authority
How much decision-making responsibility do I actually want?
2. Field Exposure
Do I enjoy being on the ground, solving problems and dealing directly with people?
3. Pressure Tolerance
Am I comfortable with unpredictable situations and responsibilities extending beyond office hours?
4. Public Dealing
Do I enjoy continuous interaction with citizens, officials and stakeholders?
5. Financial & Career Considerations
What are the long-term service conditions, opportunities and responsibilities?
6. Family & Personal Life
How important are weekends, festivals, family time and personal space to me?
7. Work-Life Balance
What kind of daily routine will allow me to remain productive without compromising the life I want outside work?
The Real Question
There is no universally perfect UPPCS post.
A person who thrives on field challenges, authority, public interaction and responsibility may genuinely enjoy a demanding field-oriented assignment.
Another person may value predictability, family time, personal space and a structured routine more—and may find a relatively stable or desk-oriented assignment more fulfilling.
Neither choice is inherently superior.
Because ultimately:
Don't choose a post merely for the life it looks like from the outside.
Choose it after understanding the life that comes with it.
POST ≠ LIFE
Power is one parameter.
Salary is one parameter.
Status is one parameter.
Work-life balance is one parameter.
Personal fulfilment is one parameter.
The right post is not necessarily the one with the most power.
It is the one whose demands are compatible with the life you want to live.

| 11 | A Note to Those Appearing for UPPCS 2025 Interview
Having gone through the UPPCS interview myself and being fortunate enough to be selected in the 2024 examination, I wanted to share one thing with those appearing for the 2025 interview—please don't let the market noise around “interview preparation” overpower your own personality.
There is an entire ecosystem around interviews today—coaching, predicted questions, model answers, personality-development sessions, hundreds of PDFs and endless discussions about what a board “likes”. Some of these resources can certainly help, but beyond a point, they can make you sound like everyone else.
My own interview was far from a perfectly rehearsed performance. It was essentially a conversation. Questions moved from my education and work to cricket, fitness, Article 311, urban problems, pollution, AI, civil-service ethics, administrative dilemmas and even the Thirsty Crow story.
What helped me was not having a prepared answer to every possible question. It was being comfortable with knowing my own background, having an opinion, and being able to explain why I held it.
A few things I genuinely learnt:
1. Know your Background Things, but don't memorise it.Anything you mention can become a conversation. Be prepared to talk about it naturally, including its ordinary and uncomfortable aspects.
2. Don't manufacture opinions.
During my interview, I was explicitly told to give my honest opinion and not be diplomatic merely for the sake of sounding “correct”. If you have a nuanced view, say so. If you don't know something, accept it gracefully.
3. Practicality matters.
Several questions were hypothetical administrative situations. The board wasn't necessarily looking for a textbook answer. They were interested in how I would approach a problem—legally, ethically and practically, while working within the system.
4. Don't underestimate your own background.
My cricket-related answers became a substantial part of the interview. Something that may appear “ordinary” on paper can become an opportunity to demonstrate depth, observation and personality.
5. Keep your preparation broad, but don't turn yourself into a walking newspaper.
Know your state, district, major issues, governance, economy, environment, Constitution and important current developments. But focus on understanding rather than collecting hundreds of facts.
6. Don't try to guess the board.
You cannot know what they will ask or what they have in mind. Prepare yourself, not a hypothetical board.
And perhaps the most important thing—
The interview is not a 30-minute test of how many answers you can remember. It is an opportunity for the board to understand the person behind the marks, DAF and examination number.
Be respectful, but don't be frightened.
Be confident, but don't pretend to know everything.
Have opinions, but remain open to correction.
Think administratively, but don't forget the human side of administration.
My interview ended with the Chairman saying, “Aise hi muskurate hue kaam kariye…”
I think that is a better takeaway than any “100 most expected questions” list.
Go there as yourself. Prepare seriously, but don't lose yourself in preparation.
