In an indirect swipe at the United States, Brics members on Friday raised “serious concerns” over the unilateral imposition of trade and finance-related measures, including higher tariffs and non-tariff barriers, saying they distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO rules. The reference to unilateral trade and finance-related actions is significant as the US has pursued sweeping tariff measures against trading partners.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji on Friday said at a time when trade barriers are increasing in the world, India is building “economic bridges”, and asked business leaders to identify barriers that can be removed. The PM urged the Brics Business Forum, which comprises captains of industry from member countries, to recommend removing “top ten trade barriers”, support at least a 100 Brics startups every year to scale their business to other Brics markets and explore opportunities to forge partnerships between a 1,000 businesses of the 11-member grouping.

The RBI rejected estimates that its record foreign-currency deposit drive will prove costly, saying the inflows will instead generate additional income as it deploys the dollars overseas, Governor Sanjay Malhotra said.
