At some point President Trump all elections (local, state & federal) become a national security issue. The American people’s loss of trust in the one thing that makes us equal at the same moment in time (our right to vote as legal citizens in a fair election system) is sacrosanct. As you are well aware, that trust has been severely violated by radical elements inside of our various institutions of government (all levels and on both sides of the aisle). This has to be resolved ASAP and there is only one person, one position, in our government that takes their oath of office that uses the word “preserve.” That would be you. At some point very soon, you are going to need to make a unilateral decision to preserve our constitution by assuring the sanctity of our right to vote in a free and fair election process. Every president in modern history has used the recess appointment power. It exists in the Constitution for exactly this reason: to keep the government functioning when the Senate bogs down or plays politics with critical nominations. Leader John Thune is holding pro-forma sessions specifically to deny President Trump that authority (read that sentence again!). Not the Democrats. The Republican Senate Majority Leader. We have embassies without ambassadors, agencies without confirmed leaders, and a government running on acting titles and borrowed time while Thune plays procedural games. President Trump, these people are not on your team or America’s team.

Whatever the origin of the name, what happened on that day needs no translation. The boys hitting those beaches, Omaha, Utah, Gold, Juno, and Sword, were not hardened veterans in most cases. They were 18, 19, and 20 years old. They were farmers from Iowa, steelworkers from Pittsburgh, and fishermen from New England. They were young Americans who had grown up during the Depression and answered the call when their country and the free world needed them most. At Omaha Beach alone, American forces suffered nearly 2,000 casualties in a matter of hours. Men were cut down in the surf before their boots ever touched sand. The ones who survived pushed forward over the bodies of their friends. They took the bluffs. They broke the Atlantic Wall. They turned the tide of the Second World War. I think about those men often. I think about what they carried, not just the weight of their packs, but the weight of knowing what was at stake. They were not fighting for a political party or an ideology. They were fighting for the idea that free people have the right to govern themselves, that tyranny does not get the last word, and that some things are worth dying for. 82 years later, that charge has not expired. It passed to us. Say a prayer today for every man who fell on those beaches and in those fields, then ask yourself whether you are living in a way that justifies what they paid. God rest their souls. Regardless of whether this letter from all these retired generals and admirals is accurate or not, where were they when this even more famously egregious letter came out? You cannot cry wolf now when back then you all remained silent…(except of course Mike Hayden who has now signed both of these letters). The American people have simply lost trust in all of this (and many of you). That is the sad situation we face in our nation at this moment. Trust must be restored and the only way this will happen is by holding those responsible for where we have landed accountable.
