By September 2026, Android may undergo a major shift that impacts both developers and users. Google’s new Android Developer Verification program could make it impossible to install or distribute apps without prior approval.
What’s changing?
Developers may be required to:
- Pay fees
- Submit government identification
- Share signing keys
- Register all applications with Google
Why this matters
For Users:
Android has always been associated with freedom — the ability to install apps from anywhere. This change could significantly limit that choice.
For Developers:
Independent development and sharing apps directly with users may no longer be possible without centralized approval.
For Digital Ecosystem:
This raises concerns around platform control, innovation barriers, and the future of open-source platforms like F-Droid.
The “Advanced Flow” workaround
Google has proposed a process for installing unverified apps, but it involves multiple steps, delays, and can be modified or removed at any time. It introduces friction rather than offering a reliable solution.
The Bigger Question
Is this about security, or about control?
