Also, on a totally unrelated note: being a "reader" is not a job, nor something to be proud of. It's like being proud for being a "car driver" or a "grocery buyer." It's a basic human skill, go find a life.

The Readerly text (French: lisible) is passive, it merely requires the reader to absorb and to simply—and metaphorically—listen to whatever the writer says. The Writerly text (French: scriptible), on the contrary, demands the reader's effort to "co-author" the text with the writer. Reading such a text is always an active, creative process.

This was the result of a conversation with a friend. Afterwards, I found out that Roland Barthes had a similar idea, he called it the Readerly vs Writerly text:

النصوص الدينية المقدسة عمومًا هيج؛ هي مصممة لهذا الغرض بالذات بحيث تلكة معانيها "تتجدد" بتجدد العصور، حرفيًا. بهاي الطريقة، النصوص الدينية تصنع الثقافة culture، يعني القرآن صنع الثقافة العربية الاسلامية من خلال أنّه جان حرفيًا نبع متجدد للمعاني: يقراه الفقيه، يستنبط الفقه يقراه المتصوف، يستنبط الرياضة الروحية يقراه إبن سينا، يتفلسف يقراه ذاكر نايك، يشمرلك علوم طبيعية يقراه الزرقاوي، يشمرلك رؤوس كفرة. وما يحتاج أكول بأنّ هاي هي أيضًا طريقة عمل الشعر وهذا اللي يجعل الشعر ذو صلة بأحداث حياتنا الشخصية والفردية، حتى لو اللي كتبه جان شخص عاش قبل 1000 سنة.

This is what makes a great text: النص العظيم هو النص اللي ما يزيد معلوماتك. بالعكس، هو اللي يوجهك لأسئلة جديدة وأفكار جديدة. بمعنى أنه يفتحلك عوالِم وزوايا جديدة من العالم ما جنت تدري بيها موجودة. In other words, it expands the map of reality, your reality. Therefore, a great text is the text that does not quench your thirst, but increases it. A great text is not the text which contains many layers of meaning. Rather, it is the text which is flexible and dynamic that it gains new meaning every time you read it. So, it acts as a mirror for your own ideas and imagination.

On coffee, onions, and reading بعض النصوص¹ نكدر نشبّهها ببقايا الكهوة بالفنجان، أو بـ Rorschach blots: كل شخص رح يشوف بيها شي مختلف، ويفسّرها بطريقة مختلفة. والشخص نفسه رح يفسرها بطريقة مختلفة إذا قراها مرتين. لهذا كلما تعيدها كلما تحصل معنى جديد منها. المسألة مو أنّ أكو معنى، وهذا المعنى مخفي عنك لحدما عدتها هالمرة. المسألة أقرب لـ أنّ العمل ينخلقله معنى جديد بكل مرة تقراها (لأن بكل مرة، انت تكون شخص مختلف شوية). It's not as if the meaning is a layered onion and everytime you read it, you reveal a new layer. No, It's a totally new onion every time. هذا لأن قراءة مثل هذه الأعمال هي مو عملية تلقي المعلومات بطريقة passive بحيث القارئ وظيفته فقط يستقبل ما يطرحه الكاتب وهاهية. هيج أعمال بالذات يلعب بيها القارئ دور المفسِّر والمبدِع ويشارك الكاتب نفسه بخلق المعنى. ¹الحديث هنا عن النص المكتوب، لكن يمكن تعميمه لأي عمل إبداعي سواء جان كتاب، قصيدة، فلم، أو لوحة.
